Clarification required

I've watched a couple of football matches seeing as the rugby doesn't start again until tomorrow and I need clarification on the laws surrounding free kicks.

If you scream like a girl, fall to the ground and roll over three times followed by banging the pitch with your fist, is that an automatic free kick?. Or do you need to also wave at the ref, either with one or both hands, for it to qualify?

I'm also intrigued to know if hopping straight up and chasing the ref for half the length of the pitch whilst shouting at him will automatically get the decision reversed?

Good questions.

While the referees have tightened up a lot on stuff like feigning injury and delaying restarts in the World Cup there is a lot still to be done. To my mind most of the poor behaviour would stop in a heartbeat if the referees brandished the yellow card more. The short term fallout woukd be massive but worth it. Also introducing some simple Laws like not allowing anyone in the penalty area other than the goalkeeper and penalty taker when a penalty is awarded would remove the stage from being used for theatrics.

At least eye gouging and scrotum grabbing haven’t crossed over from egg chasing yet.

One thing I would say is that an awful lot of ‘short term’ injuries in football are from getting knocked from the knee down where there is next to zero bone protection. It flipping hurts but soon eases off. Sometimes it can look like a player is feigning injury and then jumps up and gets going again…anyone who has played football at a reasonably competitive level will understand this.

i meet Ryan Giggs at his golf club a few years ago - he was in shirts and I Couldn't believe the mess his legs were in, covered in scars.

Yeah but they were where his brother attacked him for shagging his missus.

Eye gouging was banned back when I used to play. But scrotum grabbing is far better than hair pulling or getting sent off for covering your mouth.

Your other points are all very valid. They need to stamp out the "professional foul" or "taking one for the team". A foul is a foul and, whatever you choose to call it to make it more palatable, it's still fucking cheating. I'm not so sure anybody would be so keen to take one for the team if it resulted in 10 minutes sitting down and thinking about what a twat you've been.

You surround the referee in a rugby match to protest a penalty decision and you will find yourself marching 10 metres towards your own line faster than you can blink. The players know this and you will see them running away from the referee once the decision is give.

Rugby is a game that would quickly become a mass brawl if it wasn't for the discipline drilled into the players from a very young age. And the total respect for the referee. Whilst I agree it isn't perfect it is a far more preferable role model for youngsters than football. I understand football training for the youngsters now includes "how to gob properly" and "preferred methods for mobbing the referee".

Disgraceful.

I think they should have the ref microphone live like rugby so we hear what conversations go on between ref and players.

It was discussed but they couldnt do it as the language was unbroadcastable.

I have a ref link which I use when I go to the rec and you can hear the conversations. On the odd occasion you do hear a swear word it is immediately followed by an apology to the referee.

A French player was banned for eye gouging a Scotland player in the last Six Nations.
