Good questions.
While the referees have tightened up a lot on stuff like feigning injury and delaying restarts in the World Cup there is a lot still to be done. To my mind most of the poor behaviour would stop in a heartbeat if the referees brandished the yellow card more. The short term fallout woukd be massive but worth it. Also introducing some simple Laws like not allowing anyone in the penalty area other than the goalkeeper and penalty taker when a penalty is awarded would remove the stage from being used for theatrics.
At least eye gouging and scrotum grabbing haven’t crossed over from egg chasing yet.
One thing I would say is that an awful lot of ‘short term’ injuries in football are from getting knocked from the knee down where there is next to zero bone protection. It flipping hurts but soon eases off. Sometimes it can look like a player is feigning injury and then jumps up and gets going again…anyone who has played football at a reasonably competitive level will understand this.
i meet Ryan Giggs at his golf club a few years ago - he was in shirts and I Couldn't believe the mess his legs were in, covered in scars.
Eye gouging was banned back when I used to play. But scrotum grabbing is far better than hair pulling or getting sent off for covering your mouth.
Your other points are all very valid. They need to stamp out the "professional foul" or "taking one for the team". A foul is a foul and, whatever you choose to call it to make it more palatable, it's still fucking cheating. I'm not so sure anybody would be so keen to take one for the team if it resulted in 10 minutes sitting down and thinking about what a twat you've been.
You surround the referee in a rugby match to protest a penalty decision and you will find yourself marching 10 metres towards your own line faster than you can blink. The players know this and you will see them running away from the referee once the decision is give.
Rugby is a game that would quickly become a mass brawl if it wasn't for the discipline drilled into the players from a very young age. And the total respect for the referee. Whilst I agree it isn't perfect it is a far more preferable role model for youngsters than football. I understand football training for the youngsters now includes "how to gob properly" and "preferred methods for mobbing the referee".
Disgraceful.
