We are going back to France for a few days this Wednesday. Heading up to Brugge then on to Amsterdam then not sure. Last time we went we payed just over ?30 for a allocated time but payed ?99 for a flexi ticket. On the way back in France there was a line for those with no tickets who wanted to buy one there. The question is would it be cheaper to just turn up and buy the ticket on the way back or pay out for a flexi ticket before we go?

They charge a small fortune for on the spot tickets.

Bear in mind that with your standard ticket you can generally get on a train 2 hours either side of your booked departure time at no extra cost

Cheers Micky.

I was thinking that i could save some money by not buying a flexi ticket for ?99. Just booked fixed time trains for ?74 return. Bargin!

Got the bug for this touring on the Bird now!

yeah what mickey said...............I go over regularly and never buy the flexi one its too costly............the further in advance you buy the cheaper it is as well, PLUS if you have to cancel for any reason go back onto eurotunnel website and you can SAVE your ticket for upto 12 months...............ie your booked in Sept, can't go................so just go on the site and move the date way in advance then when you need to go again just go on the site and MOVE it to a date thats convenient to you.................done it loads of times.

Also if your booked on a set date and want to go say 24hrs earlier if you RING them as it cant be done online it may only cost you extra couple of quid............cost me ?3 to go 24hrs earlier last trip

and yes they give you a 2 hour window either side of booking time so look for the cheaper time and book that and get later train

hope that lot helps

Cheers Steve.

I will leave earlier in the morning now. I did pick the cheapest ticket but wanted to get there earlier than the ticket. I will now get up early and catch an earlier train.

Used the tunnel a few times, found them flexible with times as last few times I've ended up on different trains to the ones booked and didn't get charged. The tunnel is so much better than the ferry when taking the bike!

Took advice and turned up early so we could catch earlier train. Turns out there was some problem with a train and ended up having to catch a later train!
Anyway Brugge was a real nice place. Food was expensive.
In Amsterdam at the moment. Omg! This is a strange place.

A train came to a halt underground in the early hours of this morning which then had a knock on effect throughout the day. By the end of the day we will have seen over ten thousand traffic movements through the tunnel system and I must admit it's been the busiest I've seen it over the last 8 years.

I just do not understand the pricing of chunnel tickets at all

It costs the same for the operator no matter how long you are away, yet a day return is ?46.. Any longer and the price rises exponentially

And the cost IS high any way.. ( DFDS is ?49.00 return for the motorhome AND trailer returning several weeks later compared to a very heavy ?453 return on the chunnel !!!!! )

Ah, you see John, you get what you pay for! The prices are higher but for that you get a considerable quicker crossing time, a nice air conditioned carriage and the benefit of not getting sea-sick!

I used the chunnel as was in a hurry but with 30 mins delay on the way over and 1 hour on the way back may as well have booked the fucking ferry! Shite!

When the system is running properly it is still the best way to get to the other side but when there are problems it doesn't take much to come to a grinding halt. One of the biggest problems is that they are still using the original rolling stock and even with the regular maintenance they receive they still have problems. It only takes one shuttle to break down underground and that can throw the whole system into chaos. Not only does this affect the shuttle service but also Eurostar services between the UK, France and Belgium and the road systems around each terminal. Having worked there as an Incident Commander for the past 8 years I have to say that with the amount of traffic that passes through the system each year, the service is actually pretty reliable.

One point a LOT of folk miss is you can use your Tesco points.. At the moment you get 4 x face value too !!

Now THAT makes it a cheap crossing @tu*

We used it to get over the that foreign place a couple of weeks ago.

I know everyone has their own opinions and experiences but I was really pleased.

Cost ?70 for the 2 of us and the bike return and it was on tim both ways, 35 mins on and off and no messing with tying it down, etc.

I'd certainly do it again, but thats just me !

Been reduced by Tesco to 3 times face value - used Tesco vouchers in Sept 13, have to book train crossing minimum of 2 weeks in advance.

Usually use very as said above motor home and trailer is much cheaper on the ferry and the wife says her holiday starts at the ferry, in comfort not sat on the carriage floor so I'm outvoted anyway
