Chains & sprockets

Right then. I reckon my chain & sprockets are about due for replacement.

First question, should I go for a "standard" DID set, at about ?112, or a extra heavy duty X-Ring set (also DID) for about ?143? I ride in all weathers so I'm thinking the heavy duty one might be worth the extra cash.

Second question, is it reasonably easy to replace them myself? There must be people on here who've done it once or twice. Will someone of my dubious spannering skills be able to cope? Is it time to dig out the Haynes manual or shall I pay the nice man at the bike shop lots of money to do it for me...?

Third question, should I fit a Scottoiler at the same time to make sure the new chain lasts a bit longer?

Cheers,
Steve

This is going back a bit ( late last year ) but I am pretty sure the last XHD DID chain and sprocket set I fitted was 148 quid ( including my fitting it )..
And YES to the ScottOiler.. Average chain life without 15K, average life with, 22K miles :p
I currently have ScottOilers for ?66.50 :-: ( They have just gone up this week I am afraid, but are still cheaper than most places ! )

snatch john's hand off m8, them thar scottoilers are the dog's,
and even at that price,
i'd personally recomend fitting an oiler as the first {add on} to any chain driven bike before any ''shiny bit's'', i've moved my scottoiler to three different bikes now so it pay's for it self time and again. if you take your time and follow clive's instruction's on the tec part of this site you will wonder why you didnt fit one to all your previous bikes.
good luck

Now I am often called Del Boy by a certain fat bert ...
perhaps this is a reason why..
Couple of years ago a guy called round on a 900 divi..
Walked up the path with a ScottOiler in hand..
Errr, the shop where I bought this from said you could fit this for me ?

Well I had the last larf... I fitted the Oiler ( all correctly coupled up and stuff ), drilled and tapped a hole in the top of the shaft, fitted a coupling in the hole and attached the feed tube to it.
Set the drip feed to just under the 'one' mark..
Charged the guy 35 beer tokens and off he went !
About a year later he came back for a service.. Thanked me for the excellent job I had done on the oiler !!
Feckin amazing !
Just hope he aint bought a Bird and is on here now !! LOL !

Scottoilers?? BORROX !!

Now call me niave, but I aint too keen on having oil dripping around the back tyre area without me knowing where it's all going!

Everyone raves on about these Scottoilers - fact is - if you discipline yourself to apply a little decent quality chain lube to your chain EVERY time you put the bike away, your chain will last just as long as using a Scottoiler.

Trouble is, we all arrive home having ridden in the wet, dump the bike - forget all about lubing!!

Gotta be discplined about it - and save yourself the cost of buying the Scottoiler!!!

How many peeps apply a good dousing of chain lube - then ride the bike 5 minutes later? Then they complain about "fling off"

Mind you chain life is directly proportional to exercise your right hand gives the throttle!!!!!

Scott Oilers

In the real world...... Bert.

There is nothing like a ScottOiler to enhance the longevity of the chain on a chain final drive bike. With the best will in the world and the most meticulous attention to chain husbandry. You will not equal the ease of life with ScottOiler.

Both friends and my self have clocked up 20k + without being shy off the atomic throttle on the Bird. The one or two sceptics spent their beer vouchers on new chains and sprockets around 12k.

Repeated too often not to be proven:m

OK Davie~~

so you've gone into a corner a little too hot......................

you drop down a gear..................................

you have complete confidence in your tyres....................

you heel it in like Troy Bayliss.......................

your knee kisses the tarmac.......................

you grin................like a madman cos you made it round the corner

now in a situation like that I don't want any kind of slippy stuff anywhere near my trusty back tyre....................

cos my life depends on it!!

Ever had a chain "go" on you??

It's a life threatener - belive me - and always happens at the most inconvenient times....................

so..................

every 15K I'm gonna change chain and sprocket - just to be sure.

You can keep your Scottoilers IMHO

oy bertrumus old boy

i've had a chain ''go'' on me, and as you pointed out it aint fun, so i fitted a scottoiler, and belive it or not you can actually adjust the flow rate to stop any ''fling off'' you can also position it so that the ''drip'' point is not directly over the tyre, if the amount of oil released does start to show on the rear tyre, you turn it down, all clever stuff eh??, and as most half descent riders I know take at least a casual look over their bike every time they get on or off, it should be noticed before enough oil has escaped to do any harm, and the adjustment done in seconds,
Question; If this product is in any way dangerous how is it they are allowed to sell it to so many people including the good old USofA the land of the lawyer,!!!!:f

Well I haven't got one....

and I don't go through chains, but the bike goes on the centrestand once a week and gets waxed whilst the chain is warm - I guess if you haven't got the time or a centrestand then a scottoilers the way to go.

Personally I enjoy getting down on my hands&knees before the Bird once a week, on the other hand I like the other bird in my life to get down on her hands & knee's in front of me at least once a week

Once when I was waxing the chain I noticed my sidestand was loose, found it was hanging on by a few threads - if I'd had a oiler I'd have prob not noticed until - you know what :B

ScottOiler

Morning Bert,

Each to their own mate.
There is merit in what you say about about the amount of miles you trust the chain to last, but a ScottOiler used under those. circumstances would still give you a safe hassle free time. As Ian said, It has to be properly maintained and checked like any other component on the bike.

put me right here bertrumus ol mate, but most of the threads Ive ever read on the subject of you skills on riding hav'nt been the most complimentry towards you, to the point that I got the impression that you owned the only tyres on the site with two inch wide chicken strips, and unscraped three inch ''hero blobs''.LOL

Sorry guys, but for gawd sake do try and keep up.... At least come into the 21st century !
The days of Scottoilers delivering too much oil are long gone.
The only people this happens to are the total planks who havent got a clue wtf they are doing... A correctly adjusted oiler ( 1 or 2 drips per minute ) will not put oil on your tyre.. and as a matter of interest, you guys are seriously telling me that you have never seen a rear tyre covered in chainwax cos the owner ( quite pos. the same plank who wanks the oiler up full and then complains about it ) has put half a can of the sticky goo on his chain ! ??

Dont get me wrong,if anyone who wants to use wax, snot, clingfilm, whatever that is fine by me, but after many many years of using oilers, I know where my alegiance lies !
( Oh, and I also sell chain wax too !! )

theres only three places to fit a crapoiler...i mean scottoiler

1, they collect it every wenesday here..and make a lot of bloody noise doing it

2,
:loo:

and 3, under your car wheel..then drive over it

or relpace option 3 with option 4 as i did myself...throw the bloody thing againts the wall several times
apart from the fact they are just poo (s..t) the adjuster on mine adjusted itself one day during a ride out...hey presto side of tyre was soaked in oil

they advise you to stick the feed pipes to the swinging arm with amongest other things superglue:eek: which is no way waterproof!..ok they may not come off, but one day it will and fall nicely between your chain and sprocket = chan off sprocket= locked back wheel..and if your on a red bird possible death!..cos all the other colours are too slow anyway:}
