Both Mrs L and I are looking to replace our cars, Walked in to a Car supermarket in Peterborough to be told by the sales person if we're looking at buying a car, do it now as car prices will go up by 10-15% as soon as Boris releases the current Covid restrictions.

Not sure if he was trying it on to see if we'd bite or whether2nd hand prices are genuinely about to go up again. My guess is that they're going to go up again. I'm looking at a Volvo XC60 and the prices have already gone up approx 20% in the 6 weeks I've been looking.

Sounds like total testiculation by the sales person In my opinion. Not unknown in the trade….

There is a real shortage of nearly new low mileage cars simply as used sales have been depressed during covid according to my chap at the local bmw dealer. I was offered a ridiculously high cash value for my Dec 19 car with 9000 on the clock when it was in for a service.

All markets react/adjust to known future events, and I see no reason why the car market would be any different.

Best thing to do is find out when the sales person‘s next target is due and nip in for a deal before then.

if you are buying a kitchen from Howdens the best time to hit them is October. But that’s not a lot of use when you are buying a Volvo I suppose……

For what it’s worth my neighbour has a 2020 XC60 and they rate it highly…and it does look smart in dark metallic silver.

Same place had a 2015 xc60 for £16,500 with 78k miles. I had a quick look on autotrader, similar car same spec with 76k miles £9995. I thought a few of their other cars were overpriced too, so won't be going back there.

Meanwhile down at the other end of the car market .......

My shitbox yarris is still playing up so I have been on the hunt for another car for a week or so and am gobsmacked at the amount of panz BMW's that are out there for well under a grand, I am talking perfectly useable 57 to 05 plate diesels with 100 to 180k on the clock o_O

EG an 07 2L SE touring with 155k just sold for 850 private and another sitting on ebay for days at 650..... then there is a 55 plate 320 business coupe at a local dealership with an asking price of 995 and i am sure that will haggle down a bit
Is it illegal to drive around with a bag over your head? I really am tempted to buy one

Another one is VW golf's, hundreds around for very little money (petrol) proper diesel ones fetch a couple of hundred quid more but still cost less than a footballers haircut for what can be a good reliable car if reasonably well looked after

You are bang on. In 2015 I got £500 (I was initially offered £200!) px for my 05 Swedish barge in immaculate condition, even the crystal glasses were still in the fridge, with 70k on the clock, last time I looked it was still taxed and insured.

When my neighbour passed away his old but immaculate C Class was snapped up by a dealer who had it on his forecourt for £995,

A trip to local Benz dealer yesterday. Car shopping for Mrs Me. Took the SLK (2013) for a run instead of her Volvo. This was purely to nose about.
On arrival dealer forecourt was about 1/3 full. Mrs Me finds a GLA she likes and as we nose about it duty salesman lands accordingly. In chit chat he tells us that the market is dry. New cars are sitting about around the world without the right ‘chips’ due to a huge shortage of materials. Second hand stuff is (apparently) flying out the door as soon as it’s in.

The SLK doesn’t see much use at all and is always garaged. Whilst we nose at the GLA he has a nose at the SLK out of nosiness I guess as it’s not for sale. Returns to where we are and offers just short of £5k more than I paid for it 6/7 months ago. Certainly appears that the car market is upside down to say the least. Cars were dirty on the forecourt and his explanation was they’re sold within 48 hrs of arriving at the moment so they’re not cleaning them until sold as it’s soo quick.
Anyway purchased fook all and the Swedish tank has another stay of execution
For info there were no shit box Dacias there as they don’t need chips just dueraillier gears

What yer man said about chips is bass-ackward but close enough to make the point. BMW are Having terrible problems because of a worldwide shortage in silicon chips; no new cars are being built with comfort access, wireless phone charging, enhanced Bluetooth or Harmon Kardon sound systems.

When I changed cars last month, I was given £27k for my Panzer which was £5k more than what them twats at Cardiff BM offered me. I kept an eye on my preferred dealer’s website and my old Panzer was sold before they’d put photos on the website. My dealer told me second hand were flying off the forecourt. I can understand scepticism but he had absolutely no reason to bullshit me when I was about to drive away giggling in a brand new Panzer.

If I was looking for an older car, I wouldn’t hesitate picking up a BM with six figures on the clock. If properly maintained, a diesel should run for 300,000 miles.

You can drive with a bag on your head providing you can demonstrate your vision is not impaired. Personally, I’d use a pair of tights or a stocking (depending how big your head is) like a bank robber as I find I can see better. And I get to drive round with a stiffy.
