Haslam Sets The Pace But Reynolds Fires Warning
03 Aug 2005 11:07

Leon Haslam, riding the Airwaves Ducati, bettered the Silverstone lap record during the official Bennett British Superbike Championship test-day while the returning force of reigning champion John Reynolds fired a timely warning to the pretenders to his crown.

The Rizla Suzuki rider, now virtually recovered from the horrific leg inuries sustained in a pre-season crash, put in 56 laps of the 2.21 mile International circuit that will host the double race ninth round of the series on Sunday 21 August.

Reynolds concentrated on the set-up of his bike and also tyre development as he settled back into the groove, putting in a best lap time of 1m 27.412secs, an average speed of 91.14mph, but in the closing stages of the third and final session of the day that was eclipsed by the speedy Haslam, who having topped the time-sheets in the previous test at Cadwell Park, was in no mood to be beaten.

The 22 year old Derbyshire rider put in a scorching lap of 1m 26.684secs, some two tenths of a second inside the record set last year by HM Plant Honda rider Michael Rutter who missed this test as the healing process to the broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder suffered in a heavy crash during qualifying for the previous round continues.

Rutter will be be fit for the races at the Northamptonshire venue where he bids to increase his 45 points advantage over team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari, who, returning from his homeland where he had won the Suzuka Eight Hours race, also missed the test session.

American rider Ben Bostrom, riding the Renegade Koji Honda, was third fastest overall, with Spaniard Gregorio Lavilla, currently third in the British title stakes marginally slower with a lap of 1m 27.895s aboard his Airwaves Ducati.

Karl Harris, the former triple British Supersport Champion, moved fifth on the leaderboard, 1m 27.983s, ahead of double Castle Combe race winner Tommy Hill aboard the Virgin Mobile Samsung Yamaha with his team-mate Sean Emmett, returning from an elbow injury within a split second of his time.

James Haydon was sandwiched in between the two Yamaha riders with a lap of 1m 28.049s aboard the Rizla Suzuki, while Ben Wilson showed cotinuing good form aboard the Vivaldi Kawasaki, running ninth ahead of Hydrex Honda rider Steve Plater, Gary Mason aboard the Stobart Honda and the Hawk Kawasaki duo of Glen Richards and Dean Thomas.

John McGuinness made his testing debut aboard the Vitran Honda, putting in a best lap of 1m 29.517secs, and the Lancastrian is expected to race for that team for the remainder of the season.

Lavilla
Such a nice bloke too. My sister used to be his personal fitness trainer when he lived in Cambrills. I met him at her New Year's eve party in 2003 and he remembererd to get me a paddock pass for the Valencia GP in 2004. Top bloke, just a shame he can't get a top GP ride 'cos I'm convinced he'd do well.

You Muppett you have put them in the wrong order :t :m :f

Problem is that I think the Duke is a litte bit down on power for Silverstone, otherwise I would go with him to be on top of the rostrum.
