Broken down on A38

I decided to get out on the Trident for a brief ride before next Sunday Dartmoor classic run. That was 11.30

12.00 it began getting slower and slower, my first thought was low fuel, where’s the reserve tap. But then I realised it wasn’t the engine it was the rear brake

I managed to get to the near side on the extremely busy A38 and parked up. The rear wheel was not moving an inch now. The new rear disc is a delightful blue colour and smoking nicely. Bollox!

So I decided to see just how prompt the AA would be to recover me. The app worked really well but still required a phone call for more info. That call was also very quick and easy, but there would be a one hour wait involved despite me being on a busy dual carriageway.

So I sent the little woman a text to tell her what was happening and sat down to wait. With the volume of traffic I decided to try to drag the bike closer to the Armco barrier and as I did I realised the rear wheel was now free again. I got back in touch with the AA to cancel - also easily done

I got all togged up once more and eased out onto the road and made my way to the nearest crossover and headed back home again.

No more concerns, although I didn’t try the rear brake, and got home - she then said “ooh you’re home early” she hadn’t even looked at her phone

I’ve had a quick look at the brake and it needs a lot closer lookover as it no longer works at all, I think I’ve fried the pads

perhaps tomorrow I’ll get the Commando fettled for next Sunday :)

Glad you got home safely Dad, please be careful of my Trident.

Did you boil the brake fluid.?

Well I’ve had a spot of lunch after walkies as soon as I got home.

I have suctioned out the oil from the Trident to put it into storage mode once more.

I‘ve put oil in the Commando and spun it round on the starter to get oil circulating. Fuel on, choke on, ignition on and it started as soon as I touched the button. EI and a Mikuni makes it start and run so easily. That will be my ride for next Sunday.

I pulled the pads from the Trident and they’re well glazed, also there is a brake fluid leak and I’m guessing I’ve fried a piston seal, or pushed it past the land . That’ll mean rear wheel out to remove the caliper - the attachment method is abysmal and so I can’t simply pull the caliper off. I’ll order a set of seals and pads when I get around to it, as I won’t be able to claim warranty on the caliper. Minor detail, it’s all the fun of running an old bike.

Spent a pleasant day walking up and down in The Brecon Beacons. Only spoiled by some kamikaze sports bike riders causing mayhem and ruining the peace at the same time.

Had a chat with the owners of this lot at The Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre (where the cafe had run out of baguette and paninininininis).

At least it wasn't the front pads. Could've been an "entertaining" ride home. :yikes:

The twin discs I’ve fitted to the front are fan-bloody-tastic and could easily lock the front wheel if wanted, they are a revelation.

The standard wooden single front disc was entertaining enough to make me have to change the setup. Thankfully I got the 3 new discs, calipers, and pads for nowt as payment for some work undertaken that I would have done for nowt anyway.
