Good Day,

I just purchased an 03 1100XX with 4 miles on it.
I REALLY took it easy the 50 miles home, never getting the tach above 5000 grand (and I was still a bit apprehensive about that).
I had been riding a ZRX 1200 and LOVED the power. I can see the Blackbird doesn't have that crazy low-end power of the ZRX, but I can't wait to feel what's got when I am able to nail the throttle.
I have two questions that I am hoping can get answered....
1-How concerned should I be with taking it easy during the "break-in period"?
2-The back of my thighs got COOKED on the way home. Is that a 'normal' thing because of the fairing? I was doing 70-80 MPH, and it felt like I had my leg sitting on the pipe! Suggestions?
3-Any other news a new BB owner should know?

Thank you in advance,
-G

Welcome to the forum - i've found it a great source of info regarding my bird since i got it in march... not to mention the comedy pisstaking too!

1) the manual says...
"Help assure your motorcycle's future reliability and performance by paying extra attention to how you ride during the first 500km (300 miles). During this period, avoid full-throttle starts and rapid acceleration"

2) i only notice the heat from the engine when travelling at 15mph or less in town - but my bike is carbed - the fi model may be different - i'm sure someone can confirm this for you:dunno:

3) enoy the bike - my recommendations would be a scottoiler and a rear hugger. some might also say lose the dunlops when it comes to changing the tyres...

Welcome :p

You should find the heat will not be so bad when you open it up more. and as the thing is brand new, the engine is running pretty darned hot anyways.. The Bird engine does not fully losen up until you have 8 to 10,000 miles on the clock ( I know this sounds weird but its true ! )

The DunPLOP 205 tyres are quite probably the worst tyres imaginable on the Bird..
they are rock hard with little or no feeling.. As your stateside take tire advice from guys on your side of the pond.. The US of A road surfaces are very different to those in the UK and we know for sure the tires behave differently !

Thats about it really.. just go and enjoy !

Neither, nor does this one, which make them non-existent.

Don't worry about running it in! Honda engines are built to exact tolerances, and although they feel "tight", there is no need to be gentle with them, and I doubt if you'll be keeping it for 250,000 miles anyway. man8um w;;v

DOES THIS BELONG IN THE 95%?????????? c7u8

Another Yank! Beware the Brit's, a crusty bunch I've found.
But they do know their Birds.

Mine has just 5,000 now and I agree with Jaws that they stay tight for a few miles.

The heat issue is a problem for me too, shins and back of thighs.

Usually I wear Oxtar boots but around town on a short hop I have my Niki's
and ankles ablaze.

Anyway welcome aboard and enjoy the Bird!
