What is it with this firm why do they have to make all they're bikes so so ugly well except for the r1150gs which is a mechanical weird sort of lovely thing with this handsome chap on top anyway
Stan and I saw a guy out on a demo 1200s today yellow and black it looked like a fookinh wasp
He said the bike was great and couldn't fault it but
All the good stuff on it like shaft drive, abs,on board adjustable suspension, comfy as an armchair riding position, good handling, fastas hell, servo brakes etc etc
it's all absolutely lost on me cos of the looks why when they've got a clean sheet of paper to design a nice looking machine do they turn out a crap looking bike like this 1200s
I just hope the new bird comes out next year and blows all the others into the weeds both in performance and looks

Which is a bit weird cos all the reports from just about everywhere else read like some sort of horror story..

Of gearbox's better suited to a lorry, of switch gear dying a death even on brand new bikes, of fueling that sometimes works and sometimes turns thebike int a pogo stick..

Methinks they should stick to what they do best.. Big Torque quirky flat twins !

He'd only had the thing for an hour or so and was a bm 1100s owner thinking of trading in and so was prob used to bm's quirks
He parked it next to our birds and even though mine is 8yrs old 43k on the clock is used all year round same with Stans which is 6yrs they looked far far the better machines both in looks finish and build quality if I had the choice of taking home mine or the 1200s I'd take the bm flog it go out and buy a bird then with the money I'd saved buy a can new leathers etc and be well pleased with myself

Spot on John that's just what it looks like
the black powder coating ls really badly finished gives it a sort of uneven plastic look
the other plastic bit's inner fairing etc look very 60's woolworth toys ish
all very disappointing from bm
paintwork standard looks good though.
gonna book a test ride after easter not that I'd buy one but just to see what it's like compared to the bird
anyone tried one yet

Went into a BMW dealers to see one a couple of weeks ago and idly mentioned that I'd heard the indicators take a little getting used to.

Deathly silence as the idea of criticism went home then the elderly, suited salesman went for my throat.

Are they all like this?

"i dont think any of OUR Motorcycles would be suited to you sir" were the exact words from the salesman as he ushered me towards the door.

don't mean to offend anyone, but kinda liked the look of the k1200s in blue and white.

as for build quality on bm's generally, i really don't think they are meeting the standards their reputation sets. i've had a couple of bm's in the past (an 1100r and an 1100s) which gave me great enjoyment, and have to say that although i never had problems (apart from the really crappy gearbox  ), i did hear of several people who did. if you listen to the myth, bm's aren't bm's supposed to be indestructable? and i was pretty unhappy with the service provided by an unamed bmw dealer - another myth?

as for the indicator switch's, you do get used to them. it only took me a couple of hours first time. though it was always a pain swapping between my bm's and my other bikes.

I have always said that should I live long enough to be too old for a Bird ( or similar ) then I would get me a GS of some sort.. aint fussed which one , be it the old 800 to the new 1200..
They are fun to ride providing you are not looking for any sort of adrenaline rush..

In the latest trade paper, BMW have reported a fairly major downward trend in sales.
While the core car division net profit rose by 14.4 %, the bike side fell by 38% year on year..

Perhaps the poor finish and the fact they are fast losing their name for reliable transport has something to do with this ?

Interesting view of the world Jaws. If you'd tried to follow greenVFR on his VFR800 and me on my R1200 GS up the A93 through Glenshee this afternoon, I'm sure your adrenaline would have been pumping.... Unless, of course, you'd been enjoying it and then it would have been noradrenaline which was coursing through your veins.....
