Just had this in response to the question " are they (French Government) going to ban the use of motorcycle headsets?" from a French member on another forum. He has been a good source of information and clarification about the true state of French laws in the past...

"Starting 1st July 2015, every hand-free device will be prohibited (be it wired, BT or whatever), whatever function it is installed for (music, phone, GPS...). This applies to cars and bikes. The only authorised devices will be... you guessed it... those sold by car manufacturers which can be voice operated. This is the current state of debility of our current government...".

So, no Sat nav or rider to pillion or bike to bike comms in France from July onwards...d34l

Sounds very hard to enforce. Such a shame they have silly motoring laws in force regulary as the roads in Brittany are fantastic. In helmet comms for rider-pillion is no different to a car passenger chatting in the vehicle so I dont see the problem. They are a hands free device even if in use from bike-bike. :dunno:

Funny, my headsets are voice activated....and know of a few others as well.

So how are they going to justify banning certain headsets only.

Maybe they think it will be better looking at a sat nav than listening to the instructions.

I try to avoid France, but unfortunately the ferry drops you with a hour of commute on french soil.

As the speakers are in recesses in the helmet and cover your ears, all "in helmet" headsets are considered to be "headphones" and therefore banned. BTW, the legislation also states all earplugs are also banned

I don't listen to music while riding, use an old style foldable paper satnav, would never consider answering a phone while on the bike as getting away from all that is what bikes are all about for me & the last thing I would want is the mrs rattling in my ear so don't have a problem with it at all :-0)

Occasionally when I get bored I look at what car I would get next; and I sit and play with the car configuration systems that most of the manufacturers offer.

I had a play with the Peugeot one as they have an interesting hybrid car; one of the optional extras was an in car hands free kit; the exact same one I've been considering buying. Only difference is that Peugeot want ?90, and I can get it delivered for ?8.

Perhaps I'm just cynical, or perhaps this is why you can only use manufacturer provided systems. Although how they would tell the difference between the ?8 one and the peugeot one I don't know, Peugeot didn't even rebadge the device.

I'm sure the French are just encouraging us to get through their country quicker. Nothing else seems logical!

The French amaze me !

First it was hi is jackets, then bulb kits, breathalysers in cars .... Now no comm's systems

Any excuse to fleece the foreign motorist !

Maybe we should do the same and fine heavily any motorist who doesn't comply with our stringent rules and regs ??
Oh that's right ..... We don't have stringent rules and regs and more importantly we wouldn't want to annoy any foreigner upset their 'rights' when arriving in UK whether by car. van. truck. bike Or maybe stowing away and being smuggled in !!!

To be fair, those rules don't only apply to foreigners. What's wrong with carrying a couple of spare bulbs? Are you one of those guys who drive with only one headlight on all winter?

On my Bird ......I do have only one headlight on ALL winter YES !! @tu*

And I DO carry spare bulbs

Obviously I was F1sh1ing to see who took the bait 8rfl@

But alas ... Joking aside I have seen on many occasion and been told by a French Gendarme that they were specifically targeting foreign registered vehicles as they were easy targets !
I have lived in France and was a monthly statistic for not carrying my documents in my vehicle ..... Then months later when I had my car set alight (In the French Farmers dispute) when asked where my documents were I explained they were in the remains of the car ....
The policeman kindly said that was stupid... ! You should never leave your documents in the car !!!!

NO WIN : NO WIN situation ?
:dunno:

Haha, you got me there! b0x1

I am french and have very little tolerance towards people how moan about everything, all the time, so when someone starts moaning about the french when it's not justified, I react pretty quickly!

Hoping you aren't a French Chessy (near Disney) farmer who had a box of matches in 1992 ??

No, ALL earplugs, according to the wording of the "bill" :dunno:

The wording seems to revolve around those that "emit sound"

Banning earphones for all motorists, including motorcycle and scooter riders.

The ban is intended to also stop drivers from using earphones with a microphone to make and receive phone calls while driving, although they can still use a hands-free Bluetooth set-up.

While there is no ban on motorcycle helmet Bluetooth headsets, riders will also not be able to wear earphones.

They have also banned motorcyclists from jamming their phone between their head and helmet.

As far as I can tell (from a French member of another forum) the wording was changed after a rethink, as they realised that the original was unworkable.
