Should have gone in for a small op this afternoon. So sorted out kids work aftercare transport etc.... getting ready to go when phone goes. It was a call to say the op is cancelled....no reason other than due to unforeseen circumstances..... Ffs...so back to work on nights tonight then wait for another date

Last minute cancellations must be a nightmare. I guess things can go wrong and there will always be exceptional circumstances but it seems happen alot.

On the other hand, I went for a blood test today in preparation on my personal MOT later this week.

The hospital opens at 7am for tests. I got there at 7:30, picked a ticket and there was just three in front of me. 5 mins later in and out job done.

Couldn't fault them. It seems they even used a nice sharp needle as I didn't even feel it. @tu*

I am sure they didn't cancel without a very good reason: no capital in it for them to muck up their statistics. Take comfort in the thought that somebody probably needed your space to actually save their life.

My grandaughter had life saving surgery late last year, but several poor little beggars had their minor surgeries cancelled, so she could spend the six and a half hours in surgery.

Had something similar last year.

Went in for a follow up appointment after a testicular cancer checkup and got there to be told that it had been rescheduled for the following week.

Went a bit ballistic saying that I'd received no notification.

You should have received a letter - they said.

When I got home there was the aforementioned letter waiting on the doormat - sent second class two days before. Bastids....

This sort of thing is a mixed bag, some genuine and some cock-ups. A few years ago, I took my father to the local hospital for a follow-up endoscopy. Went to the clinic stated on the letter only to find said clinic closed. Went and spoke to a nurse who told me I must have made a mistake because there was no clinic to-day. They were very red faced when I produced the letter confirming the appointment, day, date and time. Oh! sorry, must be a clerical error. :wank:

At least they phoned you, father in law turned up at 8am to be told "there's no bed available until after Doctor's rounds at ten o clock" 1130 when Doctor's rounds had finished he was told that his operation was rescheduled for a fortnight later.

Last week the midwife visited my daughter & two week old grandson, she said that Grandson needed to go to hospital so she rang & booked them in.
Daughter & grandson arrived at the Hospital at 1.30, they didn't get seen until 7.30.
What makes this worse is that Barnsley has a child specific A&E.

It's very easy to knock the NHS, but when you really need it you can rest assured it's a bloody great service. I'm sure quite a few of us wouldn't be here without it.

Cancellations and delays happen and they're an irritation when they do, but at the end of the day you'll come to no harm and will be sorted out soon. Of course you could always shell out and go private...

I can only imagine people moaning about the NHS would prefer private treatment? Stick around - with this shower in charge you may get it!

Don't get me wrong...if my op was cancelled due to a life saver for someone then there is no way I would complain. I see on a daily basis how hard the NHS work...right through for the ambulance crews on the streets to the doctors and nurses at the hospitals. It was just a bit frustrating having waited nearly a year for yesterday and having sorted everything out to be cancelled two hrs before I was due to go in. I suppose, like all of us in the public sector, it's a sign of the times

A six hour wait in any A&E let alone a child specific one, for a two week old baby is inexcusable.

It is inexcusable DK, but one of the sad facts of life is that some people use A & E instead of their GP because they cannot get an appointment quickly, thus overloading an already overstretched service.

Unfortunately, not everybody is a responsible NHS user. We were once in an A & E department with a broken arm/leg (a long time since my lad was 8) and the silly cow in the next chair had brought her baby because he/she had really severe nappy rash!!!

Hope baby is recovered now, or at least well on the way to recovery.

I don't disagree Derek. There's a lot goes on in the NHS that's inexcusable, as in any large organisation. But I stand by my faith in what is essentially a great service, however decimated it may be(come) by bloody politicians....

I agree it is normally a great service but in this instance Joseph (Grandson) should have been seen to as a priority.

November 2011 my first Grandchild was born three weeks premature, the birth had to be induced as my daughter had pre eclampsia and Hellp, we only found out weeks later that we came very close to losing both daughter & granddaughter, it was several weeks after the birth that both daughter & Granddaughter got the all clear.

Joseph was referred to the hospital by the midwife, she explained the history over the phone so they should have been prepared for him.
Thankfully he seems ok now.
