Son wants his computer linked to internet with ours. No probs. Pop into Maplins, pick up a wireless modem router and 2 WLAN adaptors, memory stick like things. One into his comps USB and one in ours......simple. Plug in Router power up, green lights :yo: . Follow instructions to set it up with our computer.7 hours 12 teas and 15 coffees later, plus 4 phone calls to maplins and 3 to Tiscali, and where am I.........NOWHERE :bang: ! My computer refuses to recognise the router / modem, the instruction booklet has been written for Einstein, I've deleted loads of s**t that I probly shouldn't have, and have just managed to reinstall this internet connection more by luck than judgement! l4m3r And the last thing the tiscali techy said to me when he realised he could help no more? "You have a nice day"!!!

Hi Jono.

Firstly, was your old modem inside the computer or as it on the motherboard ???

If so, take it out or disable it on the motherboard bios first...Then install the drivers for the modem. If the modem/router is USB, then it should find it automatically and search for the driversx itself/ If its on a network card then you need the network drivers installed, then all should be well with your computer... After that, check with your ISP if your IP adresss needs to be registered with them for service...If so, once they have put that it, you should be fine...

Hope that is of help... Cant think of much else, although the wizz kids probably could find loads...LOL

Cheers,

Rolfy

I know how you feel Jono - bloody infuriating isn't it?

What is it the installation notes always say...? Oh yes, "just a few simple steps and you will be up and running....." Yeah right!!

There's very little I've installed that has gone without problems. And these tech support folk are mostly a nightmare. There's been a few occasions where forum members have had a better understanding than these twats.

The AOHELL crew are partucularly braindead when it comes to knowing about the very product they are representing. One moron there messed up my pc so badly it had to go into the shop to be sorted, at my expense of course........... and Jaws came up with the solution in an instant when he heard of my probs.

Some of these techy folk have been trained in muck spreading I reckon, not computers!

Yeah they can be an arse:bang: . Firstly you say your computer refuses to recognise your wireless router, it won't, all your looking for is to see if your USB wireless adapters are picking up it's signal, they should be but that doesn't mean you will be transmitting your broadband connection.First things first you have to configure your router, this is done by logging on to it through your internet browser, in your guide you should have an ip address, it will look somthing like this : http://192.168.0.1 or maybe http://192.168.1.1 if this works you will get to an username and password screen. Have you got this far ? if so its just a case of configuring the router to Tiscali ISP settings these should be as follows:
Virtual Circuit Identifier - VCI
38
Virtual Path Finder- VPI
0
Encapsulation Mode
VCMux
Authentication Type
CHAP
Protocol
RFC 2364:pPP over ATM (PPPoA)
Modulation Type
G.DMT or Auto
Primary DNS Server
212.74.112.66
Secondary DNS Server
212.74.112.67
hope this helps,

PS before doing any of this make sure you reset the router and start afresh

GFS,
Yeah I got past the log in screen, but then where do I go to put in the settings, there appears to be a number of screens to go for in the instructions like PPPoA, PPPoE, static connection setup, DHCP connection setup, and classical IP over ATM connection setup?? I found the VCI and VPI boxes but could not find anywhere to input the protocol,Prim DNS, sec DNS etc. The I.P. address is indeed 192.168.1.1 The Modem router is an Addon GWAR3000. And do I disconnect the modem,(its external, supplied when I switched to Tiscali)) and do I disable it as well. Cheers for any help.

Hi Jono

I had exactly the same trouble when I first went wireless. Bought a router , and 1 usb network adaptor, + my laptop is already wireless enabled. Un packed everything and followed the instructions to the letter. After hours and hours the best I could manage was no connection with my new router but picked up a signal from next doors. Gave up for a while then a mate of mine got a belkin 54g router, set it up in ten mins. Went to PC world , got belkin router , got home comes with a thick manual and a short 1 page easy set up leaflet. followed this mainly involved setting things to auto detect ,dns etc and it was working in 10 mins and has done ever since. Even managed to set the WEP 128 bit encryption up. To clarify the belkin is just a router , not a modem router. If you are not sorted yet it may be quicker to take it back and swap it.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Hi jono,

I assume you have a wireless modem router, not just a router, if so yes disconnect your supplied modem you don't need it anymore as you will be using the new one.
After "loging on" to your router the first screen you should see the logon screen (username and password) probably admin + admin for both. Next you will be taken to your home screen, goto "setup" at the top of screen, then you will be looking for something like "new connection" or "connection 1" on this screen username and password will be what you where given by your ISP,Tiscalli, username will be your Email address or something similar and password, well hopefully only you know that:dunno:. Make sure any settings you can change agree with the Tiscalli settings I sent you and click apply.
Next and very importantly goto TOOLS>SYSTEM COMMAND>SAVE ALL.This should save all your settings and you should be up and running. Best of Luck
If not don't flog yourselfsh1tehppns , theres always tomorrow Just make sure you reset before doing this and save all to apply

Easy peasy. Buy wireless router, connet up 3 lap tops and 2 base systems. Tie eldest boy to chair (with wheels so he can move around) ..... leave for 2 hours, have a fag, cuppa, go for a ride, ....... thank god he knows what to do.

Cus I'd be fooookard. :bang:

He will be back Sunday.... away with TA training. If you havent sussed it I'll tie him to the BIRD site for you.

WEEeelll not really sussed it, I can get connected but when I close the 'Puter down it disconnects completely and I have to go through and set it all up again, this despite saving the settings on it. Also when I try and set up Wireless encryption it disconnects itself again. :bang:

Hi Jono,

Glad you're working...to a fashion...:bang:
Couple of questions. Is your Router connected in any way to your PC, or is it powered independantly ?. Secondly you first mentioned the whole idea of this was so your son could share your internet connection, are your computers networked or just sharing your internet connection ? This question being more to with WEP encryption problems.

Hi, Router is powered independently, connected only to phone socket and power socket, our computers are just sharing the internet connection. Sorry for delay just got back on line. :bang:

Jono,

I had a similar problem with a Belkin wireless router. It kept losing all its settings, requiring to be set up again on several occasions.
I ended up returning it to the shop and got an E-Tec wireless router.
It came with really clear instructions and took about 10 minutes to set up.
Not had a problem since...
