Just bought a 2000 bird, 12,000 on the clock, seemed a good deal until chain sapped on motorway.
Im fine, but even before it snapped, engine began to chug.
Had it fixed new chain and sprockets which vendor manfully paid for, but the chugging continues..
I know he hadn't ridden it for ages, and fuel was near bottom of the tank.
Could this be a residue problem that needs blasting out?
Nothing worrying in service history to indicate cylinder misfire problems.

Would adding fuel injection system cleaner b a good first step?

Beginning to feel i've been mugged off and a bit worried. I'm not a mechanic, have only done basic maintenance before.
thanks

As above ???

And more importantly .... what colour is it ??

Tho I would suggest the sluggishness could be old petrol (or it could be a red bird?)
A good run with some new petrol should sort it ??
OR....... if really bad .... a set of plugs and a new air filter are a good place to start .....

Loom fix ??? This could cause random issues ???

Clueless in most things
Petrol would be my first place also. Clean petrol and redex or something similar won't hurt to try first although as you've ridden it since picking it up I assume fresh petrol has gone in?

If still problems then I would be tempted to take the tank off (quite easy but take pics and label tubes) and rinse the tank out with some petrol to see if any crap comes out due to being sitting for a while if a lot does then do a few rinses till it becomes clear. The next step petrol wise would be the fuel filter.

Electronic wise check all the plugs are clean or cleaned up, all the plug leads are pushed on firmly and the loom fix is a must do at some point as mentioned.

I wouldn't rush to assume you've been mugged off just yet. Bikes that have been standing for quite a while often need some love to get them back up and running,The chain is a good example as it probably rusted and seized so became weak. It's just a process of going through the obvious.

Maybe a simple fix.... If there is a K&N air filer installed chuck it is far away as possible and replace with a paper one. K&Ns and Birds do not generally mix well. - I had exactly this issue when I picked up my last FI Bird and had an awful 220 mile run home%$fan

Other than that as above chuck in a couple of bottles of Redex, won't do it any harm and will probably make a positive difference even if that is not what the problem is.

My personal advice is not to over complicate this, Bird engines are really reliable so it is likely to be something simple.

Keep posting.

Hi thanks, yes it is red? Why does that make a difference?

The only "chugging" I know is a steam train and drinking beer from the neck of a bottle. I assume neither apply in this case. :-0)

C'mon JB. A little more detail of what your bike is doing would help. :-0)

What exactly is "chugging", JB? :dunno: :-0)

Like a misfire feeling, power not getting through evenly causing a juddering chugging sound at low revs, after 4000 its better but can still feel acceleration is juddering slightly at high speed.

Ignore the colour bias, JB.

Have you checked if someone has fitted a K&N air filter, JB. They cause all sorts of fuelling problems on a Bbird. I would stick some injection cleaner through her for starters and obviously new fuel which I assume you have already done. If that doesn't cure it then the loom fix would be next. We are assuming no-one has remapped the ECU. Standard exhausts? Private owner before you?

It could be electrical but it sounds more like a fuel starvation and as you mentioned it gets better it maybe it is revving through it

when you say chugging do you mean it feels like it is holding back as you rev it?. Have you tried new fuel yet?

Yes two tankfulls. Yes it does feel like its holding back intermittently. First 30 miles it ran like a BB should, since chugging/juddering started the acceleration is not smooth.
It feels like it needs to do a massive backfire fart and clear its tubes but cant.

Yes private, yes 2 tankfuls, standard exhausts, dont know about ECU. Will follow advice and add cleaner, check plugs and filter.

thanks

Wish I had thought of that, say in post 5.

I was just bringing the ideas all together as JB appeared to have, wisely, ignored your posts. Your reputations obviously preceded you. :-0)
