or put it another way, I don't want to get caught out again!

Ok, looking for a bike to use here in the UK, found the following 'bird in Peterborough through local Honda dealer.

Black Blackbird (is there any other colour?)
18500 miles
"S" reg carb model
New tyres, Dunlops 207's F+R
?3995

(may haggle if there is no trade-in which is a possibility, cos I likes my TRX)

Clean and tidy, and will polish up pretty well, couple of side panel screws need a bit of love and attention cos they're a bit grotty, but generally better than my last 'bird purchase, so, is it over/under priced, is worth me growing longer arms to reach the money at the bottom of pockets?

or should I walk away?

Your advice / comments please!

For ?250~?500 more you could buy a 99 possibly 2000 injected model privately.

?3995 is a reasonable cost from a dealer make sure you have any bits likely to wear out soon be replaced (tyres, brake pads, c&s etc) and get a warranty worth having included.

Spoken to the previous owner? Ask the dealer for an HPI check and ask to see it!

BOB's right Mike, cheaper private if you know what your looking for, the injected BB feels smoother too.
I paid nearly a grand below retail for mine and it had a grands worth of bits too,, luck of the draw.
HPI is a must.......
My mate traded his BB in for a Jag last year and the garage did'nt clear his finance.....the bike was in a main Honda dealers in Manchester up for sale whilst still under a finance agreement.
Good Luck R#?

cheers..

for the advice guys n gals.

(Sorry about the double new thread, forum dropped out and I reposted it, only to find that the original had actually been posted!)

Aside from the obvious carb / injection, are there any other differences between the early and later bikes? Thirst, smoothness, speed, driveability?

So, I think I'll see what sort of deal I can get with some haggling chucked in for good measure.

Let you know how I get on.

Carb bike
small issue with the reg / rec, les tank range, linked brake bias a ok but reset on the efi to a better balance
EFI bike
thirstier ( av. 43ish against 48 on my carb ), slightly lower top speed ( lord knows why ! but it is only a couple of MPH ), reg rec issue pretty much sussed out with a bigger, finned item.

Must admit I still like riding the carb one more than the efi I presently own !

Overal milage is just not an issue unless the poor thing has never been serviced.. and a couple of fasteners ? Moan at the dealer and he will proly replace them if it means doing a deal !
the price is a little high but not from a dealer.. in fact it is on the money .
Remember, thanks to Euro legislation the dealer is now responsible for EVERYTHING on a bike except the tyres and other consumables.. so nowadays dealers have to put a little more on a bike to cover their arses when things go phut

as this dealer is a little vague when asked about what warranty comes with this particular bike, simply saying, you'll be looked after.
I have heard several dealers saying this recently, rather than "oh you get 3/6 months parts and labour"

Walk Away

Seriously - if the dealer is this vague at this stage of the "negotitaions" then we can only imagine what he'll be like when your money is in his bank.....................................

MCN and autotrader are listing quite a range.
Oxford Motorcycle Engineers (good guys) are listing a couple....

Buying and selling is a pain in the arse at the best of times you don't need tp put up with vague dealers.

Lots of love

He was only vague in the sense that he said that all things like warranties have changed recently, lots more dealer involvment, no specific time period, to be fair, I don't think he was being deliberately misleading.

Dealer is Bernards in Peterborough, who have been generally helpful in the past with my VFR's.

and Bob, when do you dare post the picture of the swimwear then? having had my case turned out at the airport and having to explain exactly what the stretchy neoprene swimming trunk lookalike was for (in german, and the looks I got were strange to say the least!) , the least you can do is show the lads and lasses what we are gibbering about!
