Bird Sat Nav

cheapest alternative

Hey Birdman Steve, don't go drilling holes or trudging round chandlers, I have a Ram ball mount that I don't need - yours for a contribution to the Lifeboats.
I live in Staines so should be simple to collect too.

Has anyone managed to get a GPS mounted above the clocks ?

I don't have a DB screen fitted yet, but hoping that having one fitted will give the space I'd need.

In all honesty it would have to be a very small sat nav, as even with a DB there's not a lot of room, may I respectfully suggest you look at the space available, though I'm sure I and others would like to see how you managed it, if you decide to go that route!! :dunno:

I managed it with my old SprintST 1050, so hoping I can do the same here.

It's a Garmin 590LM so anything but small and it sounds like I'm going to struggle, but if I manage to work something out, I'll post a load of pics and info.

Garmin 350LM, using the supplied mount on a home made fixed bracket secured through the steering stem.
Only negative with the position (just below the clocks) too far out of my eye line especially if your having to concentrate on the traffic but need to check it to get exit/junction right. eg roundabouts.

I wouldn't be looking at that point. That's when the audio is really of value.

I have the audio but that normally blurts out "take the exit" sometimes when your right on it depending on how close the last exit was.

Hey Scotty, got a link to that locking nut thingy? Looked at Telferizer web site but can't find it. Cheers.

I don't think it's on there.

Just email him. He'll send it out and then request payment. Top service. @tu*

If of any use RAM have a range of cradles to fit many satnavs that are securely fitted to the ball. There also waterproof cradles on the market but I never felt the need although my non bike specific Garmin was used in all weathers

Clueless in most things
Sorry.. Missed the other half !
Hard wired to a switched point, mounted on a home brew mount which was basically a long lump of 8mm threaded rod through the headstock
Bottom end large washer and a nut, top end a plastic ball I got from a chandlers.
I then used the supplied arm to lift the gps up a bit

I have this same type and thought some might want to see things incase they want to make their own...my camera is crap but you get the point

The main thing is the 8mm threaded bar so I will work from right to left just because I can

starting at the right side end, a nycloc nut for an 8mm bar, then a 1 1/4 wide washer with an 8mm center hole.

Then the 8mm threaded bar, this one fits right at 11 inches long

Then a 3/4 inch washer and rubber washer again with an 8mm hole

Then a 1 inch long 8mm thread joiner

Then the black ball with a 8mm thread and this one has had the thread cut down to 7-8mm in length (I remember John called this a particular thing but All I know it as a ball with a thread at one end and an allen key head at the other) The ball is 1 inch wide

join all together except the bottom washer and nyloc nut, remove the rubber bung from the headstock collar (put it somewhere safe) pass the thread down the headstock tube and then put on and tigten the washer and nyloc nut whilst tightening the collar too then simply screw in the vall with a bit of blue threadlock.

Job done

and yes my pictures are shit but again, you get the idea :-0)

That is a perfectly splendid solution@tu* I love home made solutions that do the job for a fraction of the price of so called custom solutions.

The only thing I would add is that the contraption does not need to be that long - the big nut on top of the headstock is easy to remove with a drift: the contraption can be fitted To the nut while it is off the bike and only needs to be about 3 inches long.

Ball size is 25mm and like I say, bought it from a chandlers..
Absolutely NO idea what they are supposed to be for.. Someone suggested I try asking in one .. described what I want and he said no problem.. From memory it was about a quid !

Could I have some idea of what you ordered for the security bolt please Paul, I have a big ugly Ram anti theft "thing" on my ram mount at the moment, but don't know where or what to order to put a security bolt in its place as you have done!! :dunno:

Although I never did it, when I was ordering a lock RAM they told me not to bother; they said the best and easiest security measure was to put a couple of cable ties round the arm once it is on the bike - this will stop the arm spreading if undone. Maybe a bit Heath Robinson but will stop the opportunist.....although a good tug will get the satnav off in any event......

Ps the ram mount ball I used came with enough thread on it to fit on the headstock nut. Mi listed all the part numbers in Help some years back.....
