Best Flip Lid??

I need a new helmet, white, with flip-front to use when I'm instructing.

My old one is a Caberg J+1, which, in it's day was the best value-for-money in the class, but sadly past it's best now and bloody noisy at speed!

I bought a Schuberth Concept, fantastic lid; light, quiet, easy on/off and the venting is superb in this weather. The sun visor is damn useful too. Typical of my luck, I tried to fit my radio kit, and although the earpieces were easy, there is no way to fit the boom-mic without cutting out a chunk of the chin deflector!

I'm not gonna mess like that - just listed it on e-bay.

Options?

1. Caberg Justissimo, almost as good, comfy, useful as Schuberth.
2. Shoei Synchrotec, ditto, twice the money of Caberg.

Any opinions, advice please folks??

Have you tried the new Nolan N101 Classic VPS? A popular instructors helmet and I think on the Sonic Communications list of police hemets. The VPS is an external sun visor (removable) and it comes with a pinlock anti mist insert similar to Shoei. Also has a 5 year warranty and ACU approval, not that that means anything on the road.

The Lazer Concept

double glazed visor ( no misting ) built in sun visor about ?170 ish

had one for 3 years now no probs ( not the quitest ) nowts fell off or broken yet

And its one of the few that due to the way the flip works dont open up if you land on yer chin unlike some others

Before looking too hard at flip fronts, it may be worth considering a couple of worrying facts..

1) It has been noticed by paramedics that a lot of the flips come open during a crash resulting in broken jaws .. I believe this happened to Clive when he had his big one last year.

2) Studies in motorcycle accident aftermaths have found neck trauma to be a major contributory factor in long term accident induced problems.
It was concluded the heavier the helmet the more likely a neck injury will result ( welll DURR !! LOL )
Therefore flip front helmets with all the various gubbins are somewhat more likely to cause neck injury than a lighter bash hat..

Flip up

I had a Syncrotec II last year, quieter than an Arai, heavier by a long shot, comfort so-so. Sold it because it caused a updraft under the chin and into the helmet, sucking the debris of squashed flies off my jacket, when they explode.
Not nice have fly wings going in you eye with the visor down .WIERD
Went and bought another Arai ( QF )

Was about to mention the same concerns as Jaws.

Think the BMW flip is made by Schuberth...?

Been there, and had one

You are something like 70% more likely to suffer a fatal fracture to the base of the skull with a flip front in a crash than with a conventional full face helmet.

That is before you go into details of severe breathing trauma caused by the front imploding, and actually becoming detached from the riders head.

I have a whole load of case studies from the last 10 years, and in about 80% of all fatalities the rider was wearing a flip front, and of those who suffered severe head injury, about 50% were wearing a flip front.

It has nothing to do with the weight, it is all to do with the design regardless of make or manufacturer, and in some cases there have been a few manufcaturers who have cone very close to losing their BSI or EC22/05 accreditation.

I am currently dealing with three cases where the rider was wearing a flip front, and there are possible product liability claims depending on my findings!

Hi TC

This is a hypothetical question since I wear a full face helmet - but with the statistics you have is there a better (or worse) flip front helmet to have an accident in?

Thanks for all the input folks! Some interesting options to consider!

I'm aware of the negatives when wearing a flip-front helmet, however, as an Instructor they are an absolute god-send! Beats having to keep putting lid on and off every few minutes when talking with Students.

I use the white flip when teaching, then one of my full-face lids when out for a play, so I get the best of both worlds I suppose.

I have the same lid an the visor started to peel out a plastic film, is this the problem you had ?
couldn't have it replaced :bang:
also the the lock of the flip system is not relyable.

Letch
Yes, that was the problem.
The film on the inside ( anti fog I think) started to peel. it was replaced due to the 'claim' being within 12 months, then the next one again within another 12 months. but the say they have fixed the problem now, so no more warranty claims.

After TC's comments, I'm glad I only use a flip front when training.
