Avon Storm 3D XM - do they wear out?

bmwdumptruck

Come on you Hatters
After pretty much 3 sets of Pilotroad3's I'm fitting a set of 3Ds to the Pan this week. The pilots did about 8k front and 5.5k from the rears, some I'm hoping the 3Ds do a bit better.

good looking AND modest
I've 3k on the set Gary gave me for evaluation now, and still unable to see much/any significant wear on front or back, the one thing I will say is they stick like glue!! silly speeds and messing around chucking the bike right over "even with the rear not set up properly" :whi5tl: and the bike felt planted and stable at all times, I for one am VERY happy with them!! thanks Gary for sending them, after the front on the Storm 2 went "funny" on me!!

I know Scotty is a "bit" happy with the wear rate, or rather the lack of wear!! @tu*

Gary looked at my rear (ooohhheeerr Mrs!!) at the Bash and ask how many miles. I wasn't sure.

I've just checked my records :

4,643 (F)
10,066 (R)

The rear still has about 3mm above the wear indictators!!!!
Apart from the wear what is really good is that they haven't squared off despite most of my miles being rolling (many wouldn't consider the speeds rolling!) up and down the M11 or slow stuff through London. Perhaps a few spirited rides is helping keeping the profile.

The previous 3D XM front I had did 13,077 miles which is similar to what I got on the last Storm 2.
Previous Storm 2 rears have given me between 8,200 and 9,500 so the XM's are beating that massively. I was expecting the 3D's to give 10% extra mileage but I reckon I might get 30-40% out of the rear!!

My concern is Gary will read this and feel he's giving me too many miles for me money! h1d1ng2

So I've had the summer on the Pan on the 3Ds.
Initial set produced horrendous front wheel wobble slowing from 40-30mph, so Gary organised a replacement front tyre. The original was oval and just wouldn't balance. So yet another duff Avon:dunno:
I've done various trips throughout the season, including bumping into Jaws in Fort Augustus in July.
As of half term, where we trailered the bike up to Lochgilphead and managed two days out on it around Oban and Glencoe, the rears done a bit over 5600 and is just about shot. There's a bit left in the centre, but the flanks are almost bald.
However, the biggest issue is how unstable they've made the Pan. I hoped they'd settle down once some wear had happened, but no luck. Bear in mind I've never had any issues with stability on the Pilots previously. At motorway speeds she gets quite scary weaving around and shaking it's head under light braking.
So that's it for me and Avon, I reckon I've given them fair chance to sort their obvious inability to control the quality of their manufacturing process. That's now three duff, poorly made Avons I've suffered, as well as the instability suffered on the Pan. Gary says they're making a Pan specific tyre, but not for a couple of years. Too late I'm afraid, I'll be back on the pilots for next years season. I can see no reason to consider the Avons over the Michelins. They seem to wear exactly the same, and although the front 3D feels ok, I still feel the Pilotroad3 offers better wet grip. The risk of getting a duff tyre from Avon is just too high, sorry Gary.

Storm 3d XM

I always liked the grip, handling and wear rate of the storms. If these are as good with even more life then these are the tyres for me.
I was tempted to go for the Michelin pilot road 4 as they were recommended to me but think I'll stick with avons. Cant wait to get shot of the Bridgestones on the bike now.

It is a shame really
I used to be a big fan of the BT range but apart from a few changes in tread patterns and numbers they seem to be completely stuck in time warp.
Still using the same basic construction methods and materials as they did in the late 1980's !
Add that to the fairly disastrous public statement that their BT45's sold in Canada are not suitable for cold weather experienced in that part of the world ( !!!! ) and they seem to be doing a Honda.. Shooting them selves not only in their feet but anywhere else that is handy too !!

Compare that to Avon with almost constant R and D going on ..

Yes, Avon has had a couple of issues over the years with the odd faulty batch but they have always been quick to respond and have not only sorted out the customer but also the basic issue

I couldn't recommend the Pilots enough. I've had three sets of 3's on the Pan and they were brilliant. Not tried 4's, not sure I will as there's reports they don't last as long as the 3's. One thing I will say is I've never heard of any duff Michelins. Something that just can't be said with the lottery that is Avons these days.

Letch
I did 104 miles yesterday on the ST1300 with the new Avon 3D XM on the front in the worst rain I have ever encountered. Constant running water, with a bit of flooding is the best description.
Wow!!
After the initial twenty or so miles getting the feel of them, and scrubbing them in (Yes, I know it's not needed on Avons) they were amazing. I was chucking the bike about like it was dry.
I have checked my records for the rear 3D... 5,733 miles. And they still look brand new.
I like....

All I'm going to say is I've been running Avon Storms for the last 8 years or so (probably in the region of 150k miles on ST1100 & Bird) and have yet to have any complaints about them (other than the time I accidentally fitted a ultra sport instead of an XM and chewed it up on the rear in less than 4k miles, but it was grippy and fun) and they simply get better IMHO with each new version.

I've just checked my records :

4,643 (F)
10,066 (R)

Gary looked at them in Ireland and they were looking good for the mileage and just starting to show the first signs of squaring off.

That was :
6,878 (F)
13,307 (R)

They're still going although do now need replacing. I haven't done them yet as the bikes gotta go through insurance etc after an earlier accident and I want to get that sorted incase the bikes written off.

Therefore the crazy mileages on these still legal tyres are :
10,351 (F)
16,780 (R)

The squaring has eased (maybe more dryer roads) and these things are still going!

That's another 850 miles on top of the figures above! 8rfl@

They do wear out!!

Just sitting here having them replaced.

These tyres have had very few fun miles. They've been on the 25 mile each way commute of which the majority has been motorway/dual carriage way. They also did Essex to Wales to Ireland to Northern Ireland to Scotland and home.

I can't complain about them apart from they feel a bit rough when worn.

The mileage is astounding though :

Front 14,770
Rear 21,200

I didn't know bike tyres could last that long especially on a heavy bike. I do wonder whether the twice daily heat cycle may have hardened then but try grip fine and the rybber still feel soft.

I have however decided to have a change. I've been on Avons for ever so now to see if the PR4 is anything like as good.

21k from a rear ? Kin 'ell do you drive like Miss Daisy ?

Sorry - just seen this. The miles are all very easy on tyres. You don't wear out much rubber rolling along motorways at naughty speeds. Then there's the fact London is now mainly a 20 zone. If I was snapping the throttle open or playing on country roads then of coarse it would be different.
