Autonomous lawnmowers

Has anyone had first hand experience of autonomous lawnmowers and more specifically wire free ones. Whilst I sort of enjoy mowing the lawn it can be a real pain, especially when I have the time but the weather is against me and vice versa.

on a serious note - we recently visited Herstmonceux Castle where they had half a dozen autonomous mowers on trial. I guess they were probably ‘commercial’ jobs but they seemed to be doing quite a decent job on the areas that were reasonably well manicured. And they were certainly hypnotic judging by the amount of people, including us, that were quite happy to stand and watch them in action.

If I were looking at buying I think the first thing I would look at is battery life…can’t imagine domestic models would be much good for anything other than small gardens??

The larger domestic ones can cope with 5000 square metres 1.2 acres so the battery life should be adequate.

A couple of years back we were going on holiday & booked Buddy & Elsie into kennels owned by a friend of Sarah, the kennels are heated & the dogs can go into a big lawned area when they want.
Rachel (Sarah’s friend & kennel owner) met us on return & said Buddy was in her husband’s bad books, he had dug a hole & found the wire that went round the edge of the lawn & dug it up & chewed through it, it was the wire that guided the lawn mower

A few years ago I was invited to trial autonomous mowers, cant for the life of me remember who for now, or which brand. the deal was I had to trial one for 6 months, after which you could keep the mower, assuming you reported back every month. In the end, I was turned down as my lawn is an irregular shape and not flat.
