Drive on the right!

Nah, you knew that didnt you?

Did France last year and it dosent matter where you go, theres always something new and different to see.

Just go and enjoy the traffic free roads, smooth tarmac, polite drivers, limited cops, no speed cameras, cheap fuel.

However, make sure if you go on their motorways not to pass a fuel stop as they tend to be a bit sparse.

Good luck and enjoy.

Anywhere in France has got to be worth going to, but if you are not far from Limoges then you must go to a place called Oradour sur Glane. It's about 15 miles west of Limoges and is a ruined village left just as it was by the time the 2nd SS Panzer division left it in 1944. It may leave you utterly speechless, to think that men can do this to others.
Also worth a visit, Perigeux, 50 miles south west of Lim, or Sarlat-le-canada, about 70 miles south of Lim. Look them up on the net! You won't be disappointed!
One other thing, if it's wet, stay off any white line road markings, the frogs (I love' em) use a slippery white paint and if you're leaning over you are going to get a fright. Alternatively, take plenty of spare underwear!

Driving home from a carp fishing trip last year, first week in September, up the A26 from Rheims, we spotted at least 6 hand held speed guns with several drivers being nicked. I have never seen so many on one stretch of road.

Go to Eymoutier from the Donnington when you get to the T junction in the town turn left going away from the town centre after about 600 yards turn right at the garage, (garage on right) chap there is very biker friendy (lent me his grease gun last year which he had to go and fetch in his car) and would not accept any form of payment. Take the road signposted Peyrat Le Chateau D940 at Peyrat you will see a signpost that warns of Z bends for 15kms give your bird some heavy right hand and enjoy it. Turn right in Peyrat for Lac Vassiviere. Nice cafe by the lac.

Also the road round the lac is also well worth riding. Managed to get the tyres scrubbed right out to the edge on my Trophy. As a bonus the whole area is very scenic. There is also a road back to Eymoutier from vassiviere that goes via Beaumont Du Lac a bit narrower but just as twisty. When we came back that way last year the road had just been tarred and spread with chippings about 10ks worth. A little bit scarry at times when the right line is about 2 inches deep in loose chippings! Nice people that run the Donnington! Got a Carte Micheline of the area if you want to borrow it!

A few suggestions

Last Summer we stayed at Chateau Nedde just a few Kms from where you will be staying
If you like horses there is the National Stud at Pompadour approx 60Km to the south.
Approx 90Kms east, near Clermont Ferrand, the Puy de Dome is a must. Only coaches and motorcycles are allowed up this extinct volcano core. No cars!
It's like riding up a helter skelter. Round and round up into the sky.
Agree with Aidy. Oradour sur Glane is very moving.
As Trophychap says Lac Vassiviere and the cafe is very pleasant. You can ride through the woods encircling the lake.

Smudger ...

.. be warned. We went to just S. of Limoges for a fortnight in early July last year and is precipitated persistently throughout. We didn't stay anywhere as posh as a chateau (unlike some :f ) in fact we were camping in between Domps and Sussac. The first night we were there we hardly slept at all, we were so cold!

M'sieur la Poste - Didier Dubois who also speaks Dutch - told us that for the last few years, come July the 1st someone turns the tap on! - still when the sun shone (at least 50% of the time) it was stinking hot. A Dutch chap on our campsite said he dreaded hearing our bike start up - every time we went out on it, it pissed down! Better take the wets; hopefully you won't need them - then you'll cuss me!

I have very mixed feelings about Oradour sur Glane. The year before we had visited some of the War Cemeteries in Normandy and I found those much more than Oradour.

In fact the simple cross, erected by the side of the road where she was shot (between Sussac & Mt. Gargan), commemorating Violette Tsabo, was far more moving. The Resistance/Secret Army had their regional HQ in the hotel (now closed) in Sussac.

Cheering ourselves up, do try to eat at the hotel in Chateauneuf le Foret. Fantastic food at a very reasonable price and the head waiter is straight out of Clochemerle (no sign of the Pissoir though!) Check opening times before you go - were closed Weds evening last year.

If you are not staying at the Donnington (which is run by the (English) couple who used to keep the Donnington hotel at Scarborough) do look them up as they are indeed very biker friendly. They are in a place called Bruges between Eymoutier and Sussac. Gites/chambres d'hote, duck pond, quiet ....

Enjoy!
