Any one ever used Nitrogen

richard

Cool as a Cucumber
Any one ever used Nitrogen to inflate their tyers...Just read its supposed to

1, Improved/Constant tyre pressure retention

2,Reduce tread wear and increase trye life

3,No water vapor or oxygen means no corrosion of wheels

4,Better handling and road holding

5,Reduce rolling resistance means less fuel consumption

Just wondered if its worth looking at

Yup.. but the only genuine advantage is the fact you do not have to keep pumping the buggers up all the time.
The N. molecules are bigger so do not leak

The rest is balls I am afraid.

2) Reduce tread wear and increase trye life

Nooo... except that a tyre running at the correct pressure will indeed last longer which I spose in theory makes the statement correct if misleading.. It is not the N that is making the difference !

3,No water vapor or oxygen means no corrosion of wheels

This is correct.. However, lets get real about this..
Are any of us really going to own the bike we presently have in 30 years time ?
In fact I have ally wheels here that are FORTY years old that aint exactly rotted away.. so while the statement is once again true, it falls in the same catagory as the number 2 point.

4,Better handling and road holding

As per number two

5,Reduce rolling resistance means less fuel consumption

And again as per number two.

If you are of the group who usually forgets to check tyre pressures then N is a good bet for you..
But the other reasons...... welllllllllllllllllllllllllllll :p

Yes, I've used it, but err.. not on the Blackbird. It's used in Aviation as Aircraft rims have fusible plugs in them that melt when a tyre overheats due to excessive braking and lets the pressure out in a controlled manner. It also helps with the ensuing probable brake fire from an emergency stop !!! It tends to get used elsewhere because it's a cheap, inert, dry compressed gas. They did try it commercially in truck tyres some time back, but nearly killed some tyre fitters working in an enclosed area ... ! As for the rest, it's BS. No one will notice any difference. Just like the zero O2 copper content HiFi cables, hear the difference ?

and one other little point Richard, there you are, having lovingly filled your tyres with Nitrogen, then a week later you are out and about, and notice your tyre is a little soft, no reason, just is.

So how many roadside gargaes do you know that have compressed Nitrogen on tap for just such emergencies ............. and since normal air is 80% Nitrogen anyway, what benefits are you expecting ?
