Noticed whilst working on Bluey yesterday is that a PO has fitted a hard shell over the alternator cover which may/may not provide a little extra protection in the case of a spill.

Anyone know if these are still available from anywhere?

More of a general question than for a specific application

They were made very briefly about 12 years ago.. Might have been Pyramid but I really cannot remember I am afrad.
I know at the time I tried to buy a load but was told it was a short production run and would not be repeated ... Sorry

i would think carefully before putting anything on the alternator cover - particularly on an FI - as it might impede further the lack of efficient cooling for the generator.

Add a rotisserie instead - great place for a barbeque@tu*

I think David silver does new oem alternator replacement cases and Jaws motorcycles does refurbed exchange ones.

If the worry is going over again and cracking a case, don't they do shrooms that go through the bodywork and mount just above the alternator case?

It's a Risk v Reward scenario

yes in theory you are correct however in the event of a spill it may (& I stress "may") make the difference between riding home and not riding home

Depends upon your mates. When I fell off the gixxer at Oulton, my mates had arranged for another mate to come and pick up the bike with his van and trailer. It was at home before I got back from hospital. Cost me a couple of pints and a favour in the bank.
Mind you, the side stand was bent out at 90 deg from strapping it down.

That's like saying I had better fit a third handlebar in case one of the others breaks if I drop it surely! 8rfl@

U could end up covering the whole engine in carbon fibre in case u have a spill! Lol

Ok maybe I could have worded it slightly differently:

ie

It's a Risk v Reward scenario

yes in theory you are correct however in the event of a spill it may (& I stress "may") make the difference between continuing riding that day/session and not continuing riding

Looking at Risk v Reward there is more Risck from that than Reward from fitting a 3rd bar (although it may make sense to keep spares if you're using a van )

good looking AND modest
How about a replacement from Jaws, and carry a tube of that metal stuff that goes hard as metal when applied, as a "get you home" until you can sort something more permanent out, cheaper and easier to carry about and may be usable on other breakages!!:dunno:

Don't fall off?:-0)

I would have thought that if the generator cover is damaged so badly, that the bike can't be ridden then the rider will probably not be in any fit state to ride it anyway?:dunno:

There was a thread on here years ago where someone had welded chunks of metal to the generator cover as an attempt to improve cooling; would make great crash protection!

If the need for a cover is "what if" or Just in case" then surely a better investment would be breakdown/recovery cover?

Whilst I may get told off :whi5tl: the obvious thing stares at me, no not that.

Your ebay bargain buy has an ixxra emblem prominent on it's nose, why not pop over there and ask if this has been anyone's bike and if so did they put the case cover on and where did they get it from?

oh we know who it belonged too , no longer active.

Ok so Bluey has one already fitted and given Tango is going to become a track tool I was thinking it may be worthwhile, "just in case".

Actually its the same situation as the one I dropped in Italy a few years ago, the only reason I couldn't finish that holiday on the bike is because the cover wore down and through letting the oil out.

Rest of the damage could have been gaffer taped up but potentially the cover may (& again I stress *may*) have "saved" it and I could have completed the holiday on 2 wheels instead of in a hire car.

#justsaying ;)

As tango is the track bike the need is for, I wonder...

Heli tape comes in varying degrees's of thickness/rigidity so would allow a certain contouring/cut to size but would also allow just the face and under part to be covered whilst still allowing the sides/top to be exposed to fresh air.

Might be an assist until you can find a rigid carbon moulded for purpose ?
