Try around Lake Annecy french alps, beautiful scenery and roads. Stop overnight Formule 1, cheap clean ans access 24 hr English help with credit card entry. Take Chunnel over so easy and quick. Stopped in nice village on Eastern side of the lake in Caravan, can send details if you decide on it. Your wifey will love Annecy like old Venice with good shops! and food!

I am so special.
I find its best not to book anything in advance, the missus an i did it this year we toured europe (8 countries in 2 weeks) and didnt plan one single thing. We never had a problem finding a place to stay and it was high season, we didnt stay in F1's though (bad experience last yr) As for route if you are going to spain go over the millau bridge also around there is the gorges du tarn, absloutely stunning. Have a great time. I'm also cant wait when we go again next year. :yo:

In France stay off the N roads and Peage where possible (once you're out of the way of the ports - I tend to go as far as Le Mans before starting to enjoy myself). It's just as quick, and far more fun on the D roads (less traffic, and twistier). Fewer Gendarmes to worry about too g0551p

I very much like the Massif Central / Auvergne area of France (also known as Parc du Volcans). It is a national park, with very few people living there, and as you've probably guessed, there are loads of (inactive) volcanoes. There's very little traffic, the scenary is quite stunning, and the roads are  . Fewer tourists than the Alps or Pyrenees mountain ranges (Mountains in the Auvergne are lower than either of these, but still twice as high as the Lake District). You can go to the Massif Central on your way, or on your way back to Millau Bridge and Gorges du Tarn (which I agree are definitely worth seeing - as is much of the Ardeche). I would thoroughly recommend staying in Hotel Lion d'Or in Entraygues (pronounced Entrays) on the southern end of the Auvergne region, which is about a days ride from Millau and the Gorges du Tarn. I stayed there in the summer, and it was wonderful. As the altitude is generally higher in these areas the heat won't be the same problem as it may be further south in July.

I could quite happily spend 12 days just between Clermont Ferrand (to the North) and Montpellier (South). If you get a clear day - you can take the bike right to the summit of Mt Aigoual (4500 feet or so), from where you can see one third of France in one go, including the Alps, Pyrenees, and Med. Mt Ventoux (to the East in Provence) offers similarly spectacular scenary.

Watch out for petrol on Sundays - many rural stations will not be open, and your credit/debit card (unless you have a French one) will not work in the machine. Often a helpful Frenchman/lady will help out though - so make sure you have some cashbrok3 . The temperature in south France, and more so Spain will be far more pleasant in June, and there will be less traffic as it is before the holiday season kicks off.

Have a great time

Rods! I went up Mt Aigoual as well, cracking twisties all the way up. It was so hot that day the road was melting at the top in the car park. :-:

Everywhere in France is nice. We stayed at this place last year http://www.route66hotel.com/ and although it looks dilapidated, it is very nice. Here is a list of bike friendly and biker only campsite and hotels. http://www.motobotc.co.uk/index.htm

The only rule we have is to enjoy ourselves and just go where we want. You'll love it and wonder why you never did it before.

Toured the Alps which was great but often wet in June and overcrowded.

Toured the Pyrenees, Argeles-Gazost we reached in a day which is in the High Pyrenees a little further up than Lordes. Very pretty and people friendly and lots of roads to try although narrow and gritty just be sure you don't go the same time as the Tour de France.
Col De Tournaire and Col de Aspan are great means of crossing from France to Spain whilst enjoying hairpins although Tournaire is often closed until 2nd or 3rd week of June. We almost got over it but 2ft deep snow on the top even defeated the BMW GS amongst us and we had to go back down.

Spanish side has magnificent roads and views but they are not friendly at all.

We sailed Portsmouth-San Malo going over and returned from Santander which was perfect.

Take a look at www.ultrablade.co.uk which is excellent for info and confirms what others have said about Gorge Du Tarn which is on my "To do list."

Always like to get to the Austrian or Italian Alps myself - things are just as good as Switzerland but cheaper (I am from Yorkshire). If this is your first trip though you might just want to a tour around Brittany. It'll get you into the foreign touring bug and you won't feel out of your depth and then when your missus is hooked (which she will be) you can stretch out on your next trip. When I first started going currency was all separate which caused some real headaches but with the advent of the Euro things are so much easier. Depends what you feel comfortable with really, take it day by day, see how you feel and you might even end up in Morrocco - thats the beauty of not overplanning. The downside is if you want to stay in accomodation you may have to do a bit of searching when you arrive in a town as in peak season the can get booked up.

Hi all in this thread,

Like Mark and his wife, we have done a lot of talking about a tour to France/Spain, but have no experience either. We have been to France a couple of times on our previous bikes (600 Bandit & VFR 800), but that was to a friends house which was all organised and we just followed her there.

Is it worth doing an organised tour first time, or do we do what a lot seem to do and just get over there and see where we end up?

Also, any advice on best time to go, apart from Aug when France goes on hols and everywhere is busy.

Regards,
