Fascinating animals, about 15 years ago we were diving off a rock called Trenemene out on the western side of the Scillies, the skipper would position the boat about 25 yards off the rock and we would submerge and surface between him and the rock, it was a wall dive very sheer all the way down to 70 plus metres and covered in plumose anenomes.
During the dive we all heard a cacophony of whistles and clicks and presumed a pod of dolphins were present we hung around in the decompression stages waiting to catch a glimpse and maybe take a piccy or two but bugger all showed up despite the overwhelming noise, on getting back into the boat we were confronted with an excited skipper asking did we see the Orca! Apparently there were a pod playing around the boat and we didn’t see a bloody thing, He took pics to prove he wasn’t winding us up, one of life’s opportunities missed unfortunately :(.

When I was on HMS Hermes we had been at sea for days, early one morning there was an announcement that had us all scrambling to the port side, swimming gracefully alongside was a blue whale, I got quite emotional at the sight.

When being briefed on a cruise liner approaching Port Said we (as in all passengers) were advised that if we got up,early we were likely to,see, dolphins 'escort' the ship into harbour.

A lady piped up 'what side will they be on?'. A lovely moment where her brain was running slightly behind her mouth as she realised what she was saying almost as she said it.

Having been lucky enough to be at sea for years also, I copped the classic sight of a humpback fluking in the Med. Whilst it's pretty impressive on telly, it's absolutely astonishing in real life.

I'm not going to tell you how I misread your post but it probably doesn't take a lot of working out :)
