As many of you might know, I've been spending the summer here in Kassiopi, on Corfu.
In the early hours of Sunday morning (4am) there was a car crash about 75m along the road, from where we're living. Two lads (21 and 20) in a car, ran into the back of a parked Toyota pickup type vehicle. The problem was that the car was travelling at an estimated 80-90mph.
The two lads were killed, the car went under the pick-up, the back axle of the pick-up is now underneath the cab, the bed of the pick-up going through the windscreen. I won't give any more details...
In a small town like Kassiopi, the lads were well known, and related to many families, and we also know those families.
The whole town went into mourning. No musichas been played in the bars, tavernas and pools since it happened. No Greek dancing, night clubs closed. There is a religious festival on Wednesday with a big panageri in the evening (dancing, spit-roasts, music etc) All of the evening event has been cancelled.
The first funeral was yesterday afternoon, we went to show our respects, and the second was today.
The difficult balancing act is the fact that this is a tourist resort, full of Brits, Italians, Serbs, Dutch, etc. Whilst the taverna owners have been trying to explain why they're not booming out the music, the tourists tolerance is wearing a little thin!
Hopefully with both funerals having taken place, the town may begin return to normal tomorrow.
