    Euros

All you will need is about 5 euros for the tolls. 1euro = 75p. The ferry will probably change money for you, change about a tenner that will cover return trip. And you can use the change on the ferry home for coffee.
As soon as you get as far as Newry your in the north and we all use proper money here.
The toll will take sterling from you but no change will be given. And they like pound coins.
Most shops and petrol stations in the south will take sterling but the exchange rate can vary.
Top tip petrol is cheaper in the south

I took the comments that it was cheaper than in the North rather than UK mainland.

Just checked and it looks like Dublin is around the equivalent of £1/L so makes sense to fill there.

South = Southern Ireland foreign soil (friendly) euros

North = United Kingdom home soil (mostly friendly) sterling

TOP TIP petrol is cheaper in the south.

    gr0n:

Your debit card works the same South and North

Petrol is currently around ?1.39 per lt, which is about ?1.02. However, if you're travelling via the Port Tunnel and M1 you'll only meet 3 petrol stations. 1st is just as you leave the docks, petrol here is always a little dearer (captive audience!!) 2nd is the M1 services at Lusk, just North of Dublin Airport and finally M1 services at Castlebellingham, just north of the M1 toll at Drogheda. As in the UK, services tend to charge a bit more for fuel. They will take card, but don't usually accept ? sterling nor will the toll, so be prepared.

I've just done a quick check on "pumps.ie", a petrol price comparison site. At the moment petrol is ?1.459 in the port, ?1.408 in Services at Lusk and ?1.428 at castlebellingham, this equates to
    ?1.07 Port
    ?1.03 Lusk
    ?1.05 Castlebellingham.
