1000 miles in 24 hours on a Street Triple

It’s been 7 years since I last entered for the NZ Grand Challenge 1000 miles in 24 hours event. My motivation was turning 63 on the day following the ride – was the body still in good enough shape to handle it? Also the previous 4 I’d done when a lot younger were on a BMW K100RS and my beloved Blackbird. How would a naked 675 Street Triple handle it all?

Here’s the ride report and photos if you’re interested:

excellent report geoff , great ride by the sounds of it. Know what you mean about riding with trusted friends and also with the odd hanger on, your words struck a cord with me as i am off on a little jaunt myself this friday.

Cheers Guys,

Yep, the roads are great for bikes. No freeways and the only things resembling motorways are basically short town bypasses.

Have a safe ride Wolfie. It's a bit of a lottery with hangers-on and I avoid group rides like the plague for that reason. There always seems to be red mist incidents and someone bins it.

Cheers Dylan. Errrr..didn't I mention that doing one is a prerequisite for NZ residency nowadays? 8rfl@

Edit: I probably won't bother with another one on the Triple, but am wondering what it would be like on a 50cc scooter or Honda Cub etc. Now where's me calculator.......?

Kinell Geoff......how about 24 miles in 1000 hours....:-0) How about a Triumph Tiger Cub 62 mph flat on the tank......:-0) Does 2 up and swapping riders qualify for both of us...?:dunno:

How about one each? The guy who owned the RZ350 had a mate with him that had one too. Guess they could both run out of gas together8rfl@. I'm thinking of a long range fuel cell to minimise stops.

Ahh, that explains the problems I'm having.....

Great write up as always Geoff. I'm off to the Burt Monroe next month so hopefully I'll have some stories to match yours.

Oh, I know where there is a scooter that might match your requirements for next year. I'll take good care of the STripple whilst your away.@tu*

Cheers John!

Hope you have a fantastic time down south - never been to that one. Look forward to the story and photos.

Can I weld an extra tank to your scoot please??

That area of the ride just north of your place is fantastic. Going to have bring Jennie in her sports car for a bit of more leisurely exploration.

Will be in touch on the "hair" email - still in catch-up mode.

It will be a pleasure to show you around my 'Playground' anytime you like - did you come through the Vinegar Hill loop? About 1/2 hour from me and it's 'interesting' getting there as well.

What do you need and extra tank for? Just bungee a 20lt jerrycan on the back and you have a 1000km range at 100 (honest officer)kph.

No rush with the hair. The big day is not until 17 Nov and the web page is open for a few weeks after that.

Nah, know the Vinegar Hill route ok. We turned east a few hundred metres north of Mangaweka. It's spectacular in there with lots of trout streams etc.

That was a good read thx.

Does anyone know if we have challenges like this in the UK?

Cheers@tu*. Yep Iron butt is the main organisation both in the UK and USA and I think they have some link to our Rusty Nuts club in NZ too. The main difference as far as I know is that you can pretty much do them when you want and set your own route including the use of motorways for most Iron Butt events.

The Rusty Nuts 1000-miler organisers only disclose the route a few hours before the ride, it's all on secondary roads and there are never cancellations due to weather. Every 2 years, they run the Southern Cross in which you have to ride the length and breadth of NZ (about 4000km) in 5 days in late autumn. I did that in 2005 on the Blackbird and we hit snow and ice in the south island - really scary:cry:

They've also just started running a 10,000km in 10 days ride.

All these long hauls are as much mental fortitude as physical or the type of bike you ride
