F- for geography, Peterborough is Midlands, whereabouts oop North are Stevenage, Gravesend & Luton?
North is anything North of the Thames.
Gravesend is almost Essex as explained in the original post.
Thing that amazes me about programmes like these is how they know the ten worst places to live, to qualify a true & accurate account you must have lived literally everywhere in England to be able to compare, if not it is all supposition, it also depends on what you want from where you live, ie if you want beautiful Countryside & friendly people then Yorkshire is the place to be, if you want shit beer & sky high prices for trash then London is the place.
As far as Essex folk its nearer france,,, so that puts it firmly in YYOUR area !
Oddly, Hartlepool used to be a great place to visit in a motorhome.. So much so there used to be a couple of rallies there every year and it was a fav stopping place.... The average motorhomer. over a long weekend proly spent £100+ in the loca; shops
Recently the council decided it did not want or need our money and it is now almost a no go zone.. Several of the shops near a very popular park up area have now closed ( obviously I have no idea why but like most coppers, I do not like or particularly like coincidences )

Coincidentally......Nah, forget it.
Having visited or worked for extended periods in a lot of the places mentioned I think the whole premise is flawed or made up to some unfathomable end 
Sure there are some real shitholes in all of the places mentioned but also some decent area's as well just the same as anywhere else

A guy arrived to live in a small town.
After a few days he was in the local and got chatting to the barman.
He was quizzing him about various things in the town and eventually asked....
"What are the people like around here"
The barman responded by asking.
"What were the people like in the last place you lived"
New guy replied
"Oh they weren't great really, were a total ignorant lot for the most part:
Barman says.
"Well, you'll probably find that they are the same here"

From personal experience out of all the places I’ve lived, Northwood has to be the worst & Plymouth the best.
The North fares much better in this category.
Without looking at that, the A61 in Barnsley has been described as the most dangerous road in Britain, I have no idea why as having travelled it many times in cars & on bikes I can tell you it is a super road & I have travelled much more dangerous roads.
