My old force, and another traffic officer (or roads policing officer as they are now called) makes the ultimate sacrifice.
Location is less than 6 miles from me, and it is ironic that ther Thames Valley Police training centre that every Thames Valley copper has passed through (including me) is less than a mile from the scene.
The other notable point is that where he died at Ufton Nervett is about 200 yards from the rail line where an HS125 train crashed killing about 30+ (some of you may remember that)
Everyone slags off traffic cops, but they are usually the ones that pay the ultimate price.
Back in 87 it was my mate Roger Brereton at Hungerford, 2 lads from my old base at 3MX have been killed in the past 18 months and now this lad who was based out of Abingdon but would have been part of Newbury Traffic. This is just the old Southern Traffic Area (STA), I think there have been a few lads from North West Traffic (NWTA) and North East Traffic (NETA), all part of Thames Valley, that have lost their lives in recent years.
I was not killed, but I was left for dead and suffered a permanant disability because of criminal activity when I was wiped out on the bike, so I can relate to a degree.
Traffic cops have always been at the sharp end. We made more arrests for crime, dealt with more dead bodies and dealt with more major incidents because of the Motorways then any other copper in the force, but everyone still thinks that being a traffic cop is the easiest job in the Police service.
It is far from easy, but it is still the best job in the Police service (IMO), but this is just another reminder that the danger is always there.
In this case it is even more tragic as he was only married 4 weeks ago.
RIP fella..... Thank you for your service and dedication.
