Very brave,and lucky,luck that the field was full of very mature corn ! And his low air speed and height allowed him to glide it down as I believe that Airbus suffered double engine failure due to bird ingestion!
BTW birds bring down more aircraft than any other cause worldwide.

Sorry but I don't see where the bravery comes in. They were saving their own necks as well as the rest of the crew and the passengers. This event is something the crews practice on flight simulators primarily because it is not uncommon. I did a fair bit of gliding and a tow failure at low altitude is regularly practised. I believe the pilot actually said he had recently practised this event on a simulator. Competent and a lorra lorra luck.
The passengers may have a somewhat different view.
All down to people’s perception of what is a hero, in this instance the Pilot did what he is trained & paid good money to do, sometimes Pilots aren’t so lucky.
I do my job without any recognition but if I fuck up then management will be after my arse, if I see a colleague being attacked I will do whatever it takes to protect him/her this doesn’t make me a hero it is what I am trained to to & I am sure the Pilot is of the same view of his actions.
In my opinion a hero is someone who steps out of their comfort zone for the safety & protection of others.

Each time you get onboard a plane you put your life in the pilot’s hands, you have never met him/her, you know nothing about him/her yet you have complete trust in them getting you to your destination safely, who’s the hero?

I agree with most of this, but the only luck was that he was able to land in a field of soaking wet corn. There were no sparks because of the wet corn, which is pretty much the only role played by Lady Luck, unless something else happened that we don’t know about. The rest was down to the competence and skill of the pilot doing what he’s trained to do. Hero? No. Shit hot pilot? Very much so.

If one of your colleagues is, say, being attacked by three scrotes with knives and you step in with no regard for your personal safety and save his life then you are a hero.
If one of your colleagues is being attached by one unarmed seven stone scrote and you step in then you are doing your job.
English people are the world leaders at belittling achievement.
While not in the same context as above - when Britain produces an exceptional sporting talent there is always, always an immediate 'let's knock them down' movement.
Lewis Hamilton and Andy Murray spring to mind.
A very skilful, very well trained & very lucky pilot that deserves recognition for his efforts in saving so many lives but a hero ? no!

A nephew of mine is a pilot with Easyjet. When he first expressed an ambition to be an airline pilot he had a fantastic job with Williams F1 as a carbon fibre technician and I advised him the gloss would disappear and he would realise he was just an airborne bus driver. After a few years the gloss has gone and he describes it as 99.9% boredom and 0.1% terror when things go tits up. I talked to him yesterday about this incident and his reaction was that the pilot did a competent job of what is part of their regular training but was extremely lucky that it happened when it did and that the wet cornfield was directly ahead of him at just the right distance. The term "hero" is much overused by the press.

No Andy, regardless of what a colleague is attacked with we have batons & it is in our training, if I was a chaplain or Nurse etc & got involved, then I’d be a hero.
