Knew a guy who got a Pallas 2nd hand.
Can't remember how old it was but it was mint. Unbelievably spotless.
Knew of another guy who had one.
Used more suspension fluid than petrol.

Can't imagine what they thought of that in
1936. Cool yes.
I recognised it as I recall watching a programme where a chap called Marcelle (?) in America was hand building a replica from scratch, even that was worth many, many £s. Amazing craftsmanship, al done by hand from aluminium sheet.

Today we are going to the former USSR, Russia to be precise, as the next step of our automotive global journey.

Despite much research I have been unable to find anything that can be regarded as good enough even to be regarded as bad. So here is a very bad but very, very cool car from Donald's friends, the ZiL-111.

The conveyance of choice for Russian politicians - it was only issued to the Politburo - and built between 1958 and 1967. The resemblance to Chevrolets from 55/56/57is surely a coincidence. The huge 6 litre V8 pumped out an astonishing 200bhp through it's sophisticated two speed automatic gearbox.

Various versions were built, including a limousine and a convertible, and it is believed that total production was just 112.

Rubbish but sub zero cool. Not least as Fidel Castro owned one, believed to have been fitted with eavesdropping equipment before delivery........

Today I was going to take a look into the pit of automotive awfulness that emanates from Romania. However, it has proved impossible to find anything of merit; like the ZiL-111 is it easy to find something that is truly awful, but unlike the ZiL-111 it is also impossible to find anything that is cool. Everything is frankly just terrible in every conceivable way.

So, today's trip is to Scandinavia, Sweden to be precise, a very nice country with an outstanding automobile heritage.

Possibly the only car ever built that looks at it's best in white is the Volvo P1800. Looks as good today as when it was made, the estate version being incredibly rare and even better looking than the saloon.

And Simon Templar drove one, so sub zero permafrost cool.

You can’t beat this one I saw last year in Switzerland , then I showed my mechanic pal and he told me he’d driven it when he worked at Pinewood studios repairing the cars on the set 73684186-4CD4-4231-A942-447780843892.jpeg

Today's Car of The Day is a touch more downmarket but an absolute classic. A beautifully proportioned body - maybe the rear side window is a bit clumsy - backed up by a very decent for its time power plant which made a lovely burble. And one of the rarest of rare things - a factory standard green paint job that looked great then and still does today.

There’s a pattern here; you seem to have a love of cars that don’t go around corners.
