Social media....good or evil?

I'm assuming that most of us on this forum are of a "certain age" but not not unaware of all the social media platforms that are out there. I'm interested in the opinions of this group, good or bad, regarding these platforms.
I've used FB and Twitter for very short times and wouldn't give them access to my phone and laptop now, although I dare say Apple is watching everything I do.
What do you all think? Have they got too much influence, particularly on the younger generation? Are we all lab rats, or still able to make informed decisions without resorting to FB et al?
Of course I haven't missed the irony in my asking this question here.

Only go on Biking or photography forums myself.
The main media platforms i avoid like the plague, can't be doing with the attention seeking snowflake brigade.

I won’t stoop to Faecesbook, Twatter, and anything else like that, it’s bad enough coming on here :risas3:

I'm on twitter (since February 2020) following local authorities, fire and police essentially for local issues , not an active tweeter. I have recently joined FB as a former colleague spotted an old photo of me on a group of engineers from a former life. Im a member of that group and an old bike racing group where old video footage has been posted showing me racing against Damon Hill.
I understand these mediums can be used arseholes and should be used with caution.

I was an early adopter of facebook. I loved it, but as its grown and you realise that it's generally about the 'look at me' and 'I'm offended' brigade, I came off it about a year ago. One of the best decisions I've made.

On here and Instagram are the only social media I use.

Same story here, used FB to keep in touch with workmates from all over the world but eventually I let the wrong people join me as "friends" and all they wanted to do was take offence at every fucking word I said! Came off and I'll never go back. It's like a weight off my shoulders. Of course the downside is, I've lost touch with a lot of true friends.

Definitely, limit your friends to people you really, really know.

Farce book
the absolute bain of my life
So many fookin experts who are spouting complete rubbish.
Normally such shite does not affect people, but when it comes to techy stuff said experts are just sodding dangerous

So I vote to shoot the whole lot into the recycle bin as it causes more trouble than it is worth

I’m on faecebook as it’s the only practical way I can keep in touch with friends around the world. Aside from that, I’m on here and a watch forum.

Social media in general has a lot to answer for; it’s spouted a generation of keyboard warriors who’ve become far too comfortable disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it. It’s also full of snowflakes waiting to be offended and then there’s the attention whores. The sad part of it is that kids are suffering clinical depression because they haven’t had at least 20 likes on some shite photograph they’ve posted.

I haven't been on Facebook for years now. I'm in touch with those that I want to be in touch with and not really interested in what they are doing right now and all the crap that goes with it.

My security was set high but it still didn't stop the local drug dealer seeing stuff on there one night when I stopped him and he showed me my front page. Nearly lost my job that night. I deleted my account and really haven't missed it one bit

I have had 3 FB accounts, the first many years ago lasted 2 weeks (if that) before I was ready to explode & do damage to various idiots, binned that sharpish as I dint fancy a few years residency at Derek's place of work

Round 2 was about 10 years ago & I still wasn't sufficiently in control of what was posted on my page for my liking + I was getting friends requests galore from knobheads I had never met & multiple pics or even video's of some twats breakfast ...... lasted 2 days before the laptop went up the wall

My last & final time of trying it started early this year is going much better so far, that partly down to me being a much more laid back person now & partly because I spent the time to figure out how to use all the privacy settings

I never post personal stuff on there & mainly use it to buy & sell on various pages, my "friends" on facebook are either family or people I actually know & have known for years, but even then those that post utter crap soon get binned off

Never even looked at any other social media platform as I have no interest whatsoever FB is a tool & nothing more

The best thing about social media is it gives everyone a voice.

The worst thing about social media is it gives everyone a voice.

On balance I think it does more harm than good. Too many people Big themselves up by creating false stories in the 'I know something you dont' way.

Most of the stuff on this forum is great, it's a good laugh and helps,a lot of people out. Not being funny, but there is plenty of total bollocks on here that is presented as factual that falls into the 'Doris on Facebook' bin for me,

When used well it is brilliant. The Facebook page for ex employees of my last employer is brilliant, and I can't help thinking that is because we were all well trained in how to manage social media and transgressions were heavily leaned on, with at least three dismissals to my knowledge as a result of what individuals posted in their personal capacity.

At the end of the day too many see social media as a place where they don't need to be accountable. And that is simply because it remains likemthe Wild West with the industry leaders only now finally beginning to acknowledge they have a duty to police the content themselves.

I'm on FB useful for keeping in touch with people, but you do have to ignore a lot of the rubbish on there, would never buy anything from anyone advertising on there.

I didn't even know people sold stuff on FB, shows how much interest I had! Not that I would buy anything off it anyway. I agree with Andy, on balance definitely more harm than good, not for everyone though.
