Went out the other evening on the old MK1 Bandit 12...Just short of a hundred miles
along my favourite test track...I mean route!!! .The Staffs Moorlands and Peaks.
What a machine..owned it for about 15 years now..Big beefy power ,sounds great with
the Yoshi can, upgraded suspension and brakes..up hill down dale..What a Machine.
Home for tea and medals ..a happy man..I love that bike and will never sell it.
Started it up yesterday morning and was assaulted by a loud clacking noise from the motor.
Fucking bollocks....What a pile of crap ...I hate old bikes..

Only a few things it can be mate but give me an idea of the area its coming from & I should be able to point you in the right direction ............. I dont want to say what I suspect it will be before hearing what you have to say as dont want to lead you down the wrong path ;)

Failing all else I am happy to have a look / listen to it for you anytime & i'm not far away

I totally agree on the old bike theme, the only thing that ever nearly inspired me to move on from 4 wheels was the Benjamin Button film because of the bikes, so cool -

Brad Pitt rode two different motorcycles in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. His main ride is a very distinct red Indian 101 Scout. The second is a silver-blue 1956 Triumph T110, identifiable as such by its four-bar tank badge and alloy head

Mega bikes.

Havnt investigated it yet Tony...Noise seemed to be engine front..maybe exhaust header area
possibly lower. The clacking/tapping increases with engine rpm...Other than that I have been
too busy to start taking things off and have a poke around.
Hoping its something simple...Worst case an uneconomical fix :(.
Any ideas or possibilities off the top of your head are welcome mate...
If I have no joy I may take you up on your offer ..cheers (y)

I have been messing with oil cooled engines since they came out in 85 & there isn't much that cant be fixed but there again there isn't much that goes wrong either, they get a bit rustly / tappy at about 50k if used hard & badly serviced but are generally really tough & hard to kill so I wouldn't be thinking of writing it off just yet :)

Grab a cheap stethoscope or use a screwdriver with the handle tight to your ear & the other end on the engine case in various places to see if you can identify the area the sound is coming from & check for any oil leaks (head area) while you are there

Specifically I would be looking to the exhaust as you mention, a stud can occasionally corrode & snap giving a terrible racket from the smallest of leaks, its can be that bad its sounds like really bad tappet …….. next go along the rocker cover & see if you can hear a bad tappet & down the camchain tunnel to see if there is any lash/slap from the chain (obvious if it is but unlikely)
then have a listen to the front left cover (starter clutch) they very occasionally self destruct, & lastly listen to the clutch casing in case the centre bearing is rumbling & pull the clutch in to see if anything changes

But not knowing the bike or mileage & not having heard it I would bet on a either a loose tappet or two as being the most possible cause (usually this happens due to improper adjustment during a service) or the exhaust developing a blow at the head (if its got a pars system on it a blow from that where it connects to the head can sound the same)

let me know what you find & if you need me to look i'm happy to do so anytime

You mean like the starter motor not disengaging properly?

If it has one that is....

Nope the motors are usually great & either work or don't , its the starter clutch that sometimes wears & then makes a racket before it comes loose but its only usually on very high mileage engines that haven't been looked after or have been previously messed with
