As if there is not enough shite in the world at the moment................

Published on 20 May 2020 by Mike Waters

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) has announced that a two-week speed enforcement operation is due to begin across the country.

As of Monday 25th May, forces will “step up visible speed enforcement activity for the following two weeks, focussing on roads and areas where speeding is known to be an issue or there is a history of serious collisions.”

The operation has been prompted by the partial lifting of Coronavirus-related lockdown regulations, with an increasing number of people returning to the roads as a result.

Commenting, Chief Constable Anthony Bangham (Roads Policing Lead for the NPCC) said: "Unsurprisingly, the lockdown saw very quiet roads. Many forces reported increased speeding in a general sense and some forces reported instances of very excessive speeding. It is also of particular note that we have seen an increase in pedal cyclists at this time, many of whom may be unfamiliar with busier roads. Pedestrians and runners have also got used to empty roads.

“Put this together with better weather, lighter evenings, motorcyclists itching to ride out across our country roads and you have the concerning combination of factors for a significant increase in people being killed or seriously injured. I am determined for this not to be the case.”

When you consider that the 60 limit was only brought in in 1973 as a temporary limit during the fuel crisis. :2guns:

To play devil's advocate for a sec.... There's a lot of twats doing 50/60mph in 30 zones because they think they can get away with it and that's what they should be targeting.
I've had a few close calls while out cycling, to the point where I've bought a new helmet cam, just in case.

I'm afraid I agree. I travel along the A13 in east London to work every day and the standard of driving - not just speeding but dangerous overtaking, cutting up and tailgating - has increased massively. Not sure why but a few more plod driving around would help.

At a guess one of the reasons for it on the 13 is a lot of folk who normally commute on the train

As a by the by, I can remember the 13 when a couple of hundred cars an hour was considered VERY busy.. the only bottle neck being at the Volunteer pub in Barking because of traffic heading down to River Road and all the factories down there, the traffic going in to Barking, and of course the traffic going toward London

And that's the problem. They are targeting speed and as we have seen in other posts, speed in itself isn't dangerous. Innapropriate use of speed, yes. We've all gone fast and nothing has happened. The standard of driving is the problem and speed camera vans will never be able to target these drivers. A couple of extra officers with a camera of more camera vans are only go to get the lower end of the scale of offences. They will claim victory when they release how many speeding cars have been caught but they won't tell you that most were minor infringemts.

It's all bullshit!

To make a real difference we need a complete overhaul of driving standards and road policing. I've said for years that you should have to retake you're test every 7 years. Road conditions change, people change, cars and technology change, even the Highway Code changes but does anyone ever read it once they've passed their test? No!

And don't even get me started on the arrogant, fuck you I'm alright Jack attitude of drivers!!!!

Very little of this has to do with road safety its all about the police higher ups micro managing the figures which their budgets depend on ………….. so less cars on the road = less detecting of speeding & other traffic offences so a smaller budget next year, they don't want that obviously so will have a short purge on speeding etc & once the figures are up, they will move on to the next thing that has had lower detection rates because all the coppers have been out trying to catch speeders

Its a never ending merry go round :(

It's the same old argument - those that speed that have never had or caused an accident justify it by saying 'nothing happened therefore it was appropriate use of speed'.

Who has the right to decide what is 'appropriate'?

It doesn't matter how good - or probably more to the point, how good you think you are - getting some other poor sod involved in your mess isn't right.

The outrage expressed on here at someone doing 200mph made me chuckle - it would appear that no harm was done so surely the speed was 'appropriate'. If not, where is the dividing line??

And yes, I have had a speeding ticket (48 in 40 in motorway roadworks on a Sunday and the road was empty, no roadworksmbeing undertake, no accident or negative impact on anyone else - appropriate?) not proud of it, a lesson learned the easy way as far as I am concerned.

Well, well, well, Beaker’s manipulating words to argue a point that no one has ever argued. Just for a change, like. Now who didn’t see that coming?

If I’m wrong Andrew, I shall apologise without reservation but, as far as I recall, no one on here in recent years has ever said words to the effect of their ‘use of excess speed was appropriate because there were no adverse consequences as a result of their actions’. Further, and to address your second emboldened point, just because no has ever deemed their actions inappropriate, it does not make them appropriate by default.

I’ll caveat this by stating that I do not read every single post on here but the commensurate comments that I have read simply state along the lines of ‘we’ve all done it’. There’s no claims of appropriate or otherwise, just simply that every single one of us has broken the speed limit once or twice and lived to tell the tale. Indeed, one or two have even commented that it wasn’t the brightest thing they could have done at the material time.

Sorry, but that is complete and utter bollocks.

Most coppers at chief officer level do not even recognise traffic policing as front line mainstream policing even though they deal with more dead bodies and fatalities than any other department, they usually make more crime arrests than any of the plain clothes superstars.

All fines go to central government except for a certain proportion of traffic camera monies go to the Police providing certain criteria are complied with.

Numbers of traffic Police have been depleted big time. When I first went on Traffic there were over 250 of us spread over the 8 or 9 traffic bases. By the time I retired the number had dropped to about 125 and the 30 of us full time motorcyclists had dropped to zero.

Budgets have absolutely sod all to do with offences detected. Most chief officers have spent much of their service on Superstar duty so they are biased.

Driving courses are very few and far between. There is no longer a class 1 qualification but just an advanced, and many of those awarded the qualification are (in the words of my old crewmate) not even worthy of a class 3 under the old rules, but they have to be given a pass at the higher level because of equality and other crap.

If a traffic cop could go all day without having to deal with a bad crash or give a ticket or even a bollocking, although very boring it would make life easier.

But the point is, budgets have sod all to do with bookings or offences detected. Using that analogy, CID would have been closed down years ago.

Here we go an ex copper defending the force, now that's a surprise :p

Yes the force has less officers than when you started & that goes for ALL departments its wrong in my view but that's how it is!

Chief officers are always trying to balance the books & they are rated on performance in the sense that if they don't meet their targets for the year they wont advance to an even bigger pay packet for doing fuck all of any use to the wider community

Most monies raised go to central government CORRECT but who hands out the budgets for the year ? ……. eerm central government ! & you think that those 2 facts are not connected ? :risas3:

Tell me police chiefs DO NOT decide to have a crack down on a particular type crime! we both know you cant do that, so think of why they decide speeding or robbery is flavour of the month ...… THEY ARE LOOKING TO HIT THEIR TARGETS which means the possibility of advancement within the force & that has fuck all to do with making the country a safer place for us all to live

The whole system is as corrupt as can be & we both know it (although I never expect you to admit it) and just to be clear that the WHOLE SYSTEM in general not yourself I am talking about ;)

If you bothered to pay attention, then you will know that by and large I am not very pro Police these days, and I will be at the front of the queue when it comes to criticism, so don't even go down that route.

Given that you speak with such authority and knowledge on the matter, then I assume you clearly have some inside knowledge.

If you don't then it is comments like yours boil my piss

It was never my intention to "boil your piss" as you so nicely put it but I am surprised you took the stance you did in your first post on the subject simply because you have never before come across as pro police despite your previous employment so I will say it once & only once I'M SORRY THAT YOU DONT LIKE MY POST :)

Now that is out of the way, nothing you can say will change my opinion on the matter which is gained through UNBIASED knowledge, so for that reason I will leave you to spout your own opinions uninterrupted ;)

At the end of the day, we all know what the speed limits are, so if you get pulled for speeding then tough. Don't get me wrong I'm no saint, but if I ever get pulled for anything I'll accept responsibility for my actions and take it on the chin.
I will say though that with an actual police officer, you can usually engage with them, and provided you weren't being dangerous, just get a stern telling off.
