I can keep re-downloading an electronic copy for free, if it gets corrupted.

Oddly, not as long as video tapes apparently.. We have some dating back to 1981 that are all still good
CDs are very susceptible to temperature change, which can make them brittle and warp. This makes the shiney clear top surface prone to minute crazing, which gives the laser a hard time when it's trying to read the data stored on the surface below.
