I have just been accepted to make regular phone calls and to check on people self isolating at home.
They gave me a list of local peeps...so i rang the first number.
Never again..The thing on the other end of the line sounded disgusting.
Some slavering dog licking piss off a thistle came to mind...'How much do you charge luvy?'
I slammed the feckin phone down.:risas3:

So lets get this straight, successive governments have run down the NHS almost to the point of no return & now when in crisis expect the general population to help them do what they should be doing & paying for in the first place ?

Just asking like :)

I think there's a bit more to it than that - these are exceptional times where exceptional measures are needed. The NHS has never been resourced to,deal, with a crisis of this magnitude.

Many want to help others and this is a great way of doing it.

I agree its the right thing to do in one respect, like most I will happily help out in any way I can but the government must have known this was coming months ago & should have prepared much better, maybe dumping a few quid into the NHS could have made a big difference instead of burying their heads in the sand & hoping it would all go away?

Also if all of us had been better informed from the start many of us could have made informed choices about or own welfare & maybe taken some of the pressure off the NHS

I don't think it is the time to have political debates personally - although I see Corbyn has stuck his head above the parapet again this morning - but I am not sure how the government 'must have known this was coming months ago'?

Nobody knew.

The important thing is that lessons are learned for the future. Sadly contingency planning is like trying to nail jelly to the ceiling as you simply cannot cover all eventualities - you can do your best to cover off known threats, but something will always come along that nobody could have predicted or expected.

For those that have volunteered but may not have spotted it - by using your vehicle for this purpose you are undertaking to the NHS that you are insured to do so.

I have absolutely no idea if I am covered (I doubt it, I am 'social, domestic and pleasure') so will tell the insurance company about it - I can't believe they will be dumb enough to load the premium at the moment.

Oh, hang on a minute...I can't get through to them......

The first cases were in china in December within a matter of a week it had spread to other countries, even someone like me who rarely watches the news saw this reported here in the uk, please explain how the government didn't know ? The WHO were reporting at a possible pandemic as early as January by which time there had already been hundreds of deaths & you seriously want me to believe the uk government didn't know ? sorry but thats utter bo**ocks

Check out the stories in the financial sections as to how various billionaires offloaded shares at the beginning of the year and by doing so, saved billions.
They're all claiming that they had no insider knowledge but I don't buy that. In the vast majority of the cases it made no sense to do so... unless you knew what was coming and the effect it would have on the stock markets.
Interestingly, most are close friends with the orange faced toddler.

Ok, let's assumeyou are correct ...how the hell doyou deal with it? It's not a matter of pressing a button and all is well.

Nobody in modern times has had to deal with anything like this. Steps are taken every year in the UK to give the elderly and vulnerable flu jabs, the formula for this changes every year to combat what might be coming our way, it's a 24/7 job trying to stay one step ahead of even a relatively mild infection Compared this stuff which appears to be in a different league and is highly, highly and potentially lethally infectious.

If the UK was hit by a tsunami that wiped out a major city there would be shouts of 'why weren't we prepared?'.

If we were hit by a meteorite that devastated half the country the same would happen.

The fact is that things like the 4000 bed temporary hospital that has been set up in The Exxcel Centre didn't happen by chance - this was and is part of a disaster contingency plan. Other magnificent stuff that is going on is part of a disaster contingency plan.

But, like the rest of us, those in power know what they are doing some of the time, the rest of the time they are reacting and doing their best.

Yes, we might have stockpiled 50,000 ventilators, 200,000,000 face masks and tankers full of anti- bacterial gel. But in reality the world isn't like that. And if we did some would moan it's a waste of money.

I don't know how to deal with it but then i'm not paid a handsome wage to know  I just happen to think this could have been handled better & prepared for better as all the warning signs were there long before boris & co got their sorry slack arses into gear

As for the comment about PPE its been fairly obvious for years that a biological attack on this country was a very real possibility so there is no excuse for not having the required equipment to hand, just shows how little regard the government has for the general populace (until it comes to voting time)

My insurance company (both car and bike) sent an e-mail out saying they will cover volunteering & there's no need to call them to ask - which I thought was nice of them.

It's totally useless information when the idiot's in charge repeatedly make public requests concerning
PPE...Wash your hands, self isolate etc...Absolutely useless clutching at straws mentality.
This is a virus and as such there is NO medication on earth that will eradicate it.
Unlike a 'pathogenic bacteria' which causes colds/flu/ infection etc.. and is totally treatable if you catch it at the right time and using modern antibiotics.
A virus is immune to any antibiotics basically due to it's defence mechanism a genetic coding...
DNA/RNA and therefore it has a protective protein skin that modern medicine is unable to penetrate.
Worst case scenario and I suspect this is why the high global mortality rate.
People with an already underlying illness have had their immune system already compromised so there is nothing left to fight or slow down this killer virus.
If you are a carrier? Then this virus will incubate & wait until you develop say a common cold or an infection and then seize the opportunity to implode and do the inevitable.
Infection control is about as much use as 'tits on a fish' in this respect.
This much I have learned and had drummed into me whilst working at the hospital.

Can you say which insurer it is?

Might save me and others a bit of hassle

I use Bennetts for my bike & Saga for the car. I believe Bennetts is an appointed representative of Saga services Ltd.

This is what's on Bennetts website

RIDING AS A VOLUNTEER DURING LOCKDOWN?

If you're volunteering time to support your local community during these challenging times and are insured with Bennetts, don't worry - we've got you covered. Your insurance cover will still be valid when out on your bike volunteering. You don't need to call us to let us know, just #StaySafe

And on the Saga website

Is voluntary work covered?

Yes, while your vehicle is being used for voluntary work in connection with a UK-registered voluntary or charitable organisation as long as you receive no financial gain and it is voluntary.

Blood bikes should still be good to go then.
