Unbelievable. A real gutsy "Rorkes Drift" action, yet no awards were made for their efforts.
No, in fact they were declared as having not done the job. Not sure if the word cowards wasn't used.

They were eventually honoured in 2016 according to wiki.

Military history very peculiar here, particularly people who fought in WW1 and WW2.
They weren't welcomed home.

In WW1 an Irish unit mutinied in India because of British actions in 1916.

Ex British soldier lived beside my parent moved when my father retired. Also a garda whom I knew as a kid served in Africa. I only discovered that a few years ago.

If only I had asked.......

If only I had asked.......

My step dad was originally from Donegal, although his family moved to Glasgow when he was a baby.
He did his National Service in the Black Watch and then became a regular. Apparently his extended family back in Ireland disowned him for that. Which explains why I never knew any of them.

Would have been common, particularly being so close to the border.
