Bike Films (inspired by Cougar377)

Still kickin' it!
If you’ve got any film recommendations…

  • Films about motorcycles, including racing, testing, history and development, travel, etc.
  • “Full Movies” only - no video clips or “trailers”
  • Films should be freely available, for example, via Youtube, or “trial memberships”, or rental systems
  • Don’t recommend films on “hearsay” or adverts. Your perspective on what you’ve seen in a film is unique - and that’s the only guidance that validates your recommendation, so no cheating!
Any other constructive ideas most welcome. :)

If you've not yet seen the movie "Road" about the Dunlops then I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It is up there with "On any Sunday" as one of the greatest movies about motorcycling. I defy anyone not to be moved by the part which covers Michael's win at the NW200 days after his father was killed there. His book "Road Racer: It's in my Blood" is also well worth a read.

Road (Amazon Prime Video) If you’re not signed-up to Prime Video, Amazon are currently offering a 30-day free trial period; alternatively, you can rent the movie for 99p

I had all three of these at one time. you can now buy them as a 3 pack:

Faster - Narrated by Ewan McGregor. Covers the 2001/2 MotoGP season. The main story is about the rivalry between Rossi and Biaggi. Plus there's some interesting interviews with that mad Italian MotoGP medic, Dr. Costa. There's also a bit in it which talks about Garry McCoy and how he corners a bike...you might remember his style of backing it in with the whole bike pointing at about 45 degrees to the direction of travel.

Fastest - Again, narrated by Ewan McGregor and covers from 2004 to 2010 MotoGP seasons. 2010 was the season that Rossi broke his leg and then returned to race 6 weeks later. It was also Simoncelli's first season at the top. Better than Faster IMHO.

Hitting the Apex - follow up to Fastest and despite Brad Pitts flat narration (to be fair it was his money that paid for it) is more engaging and spectacular to watch. The onboard footage, in particular, is far better. Covers from the season that Simoncelli died to 2014 (if I remember) and the bulk of the story is the knife fight between the young guns and the King - Rossi, Marquez, Lorenzo, Stoner, Simoncelli and not forgetting that eternal bridesmaid....Pedrosa.

The Losers, also called Nams Angels. I went to see it 40+ years ago at the late night cinema, it was a load of tosh, but I doubt many people will remember it.

Which one of the Mission Impossible films was it where Tom Cruise rides a Triumph that miraculously keeps changing tyre types...?

Closer to the Edge - possibly the best film about the TT to date. The bit about Guy's "self entertainment" routine in the van still cracks me up. The interviews with Paul Dobb's widow probaby explains better than anything what draws people back to the TT.

If you're using a VPN, that might happen. If what you're getting is like this...

...Just register and you can watch the movie (and other stuff) for free.

Other than that...

I’ve just finished watching.

All the things that I love about bikes in general are in there - along with all the things that make me love my own bikes, too: riding, enjoying, smiling and (sometimes) sulking because I can’t ride. It’s all there, in all its glory. The people, the bikes, the crashes, the adventures, the victories and the losses; the spirit.

Enjoy your evening meal - laugh and joke with whomever you love - have a few beers and then…

...Just watch the film.

It’s brilliant.

Love this film....
A bit American, a bit dated and a bit "Californian hippy meets motorbike" but gets right to the soul of what freedom on two wheels really means.

Oh yeah.... and it has Steve McQueen. One of the great Hollywood petrol heads.

I’ve seen Easy Rider twice and, for me, it never quite hit the mark. It was a Hollywood “take” on “society”,
wrapped around the travels and eventual demise of of two mates who rode motorcycles - but who were
more like hippies than bikers. …Watched it twice and, both times, wondered why I’d bothered. :buenrollo::nusenuse:

Yep. Hollywood does hippy/outlaw biker movie with obligatory crazy LSD trip scenes included for added effect.
As a biker movie it was poor - unbelievably shiney bikes ridden by extraordinarily clean bad-asses....and the fact that the Capt. America chopper's pitifully small tank meant a stop every half a mile got on my tits too.

Although in hindsight it probably matches the seat's comfort range.

I read somewhere that Hopper (director) originally edited the film to be about 4 hours long.

Hang on a minute - it was made 50 years ago, there was practically nothing else to watch when we were kids - it was proper hardcore biking back then.

I agree that looking at it today it doesn’t hit the mark, but it'll while away an evening if you’ve no preconceptions about it.

I first saw it back in the early 80's and then a second time about 10 years after.
There's tons of old movies that are still worth a watch today, but that isn't one I'd watch again.

Mind you, if it was a toss up between that and Quadrophenia then I'd plumb for Hoppers movie.
