Pound for pound the Fords are better cars and certainly better value than the 1 and 2 Series.

The latter IN MY VIEW are the equivalent of the Mercedes A Class....built to a budget to attack a particular market at a price point, and the Mercedes in particular remains a dismal machine.

I have had a 1 Series and two 2 Series as courtesy cars, both were poor. Particularly the 2 Series cabriolet. No doubt an M1 is fun, but probably for about five minutes like the Mini Cooper S for the same reasons.

The Mondeo has been a class act in the real world from the start...if it had a BMW or Mercedes badge on it it would have got the recognition it deserves...some will argue 'front wheel drive', fair point to a degree but not really in the real world for the average driver, also gives a ton more internal space. PERSONALLY I would rather spend the money on a well appointed Mondeo.

It did. They put a Jaguar badge on it! :D

Do you have to submit to a lobotomy before taking ownership of a 1 series...?

The highest percentage of undertaking, tailgating, change-lanes-then-indicate muppets that I've seen today, driving around the M25 and into London, were those 1 series 3 or 5 doors.

Half of them were driven by women.

I’d prolly pick a Kuga as it best suits what I need a car for. However, I’d pick a Hyundai Tucson before a Kuga.
The Kuga was recently voted the least reliable SUV, for vehicles up to 3 years old.

good looking AND modest
I've been looking at Mondeo Estates, some top-spec motors for not a lot of money, makes you wonder why??:(

Some Fords are better pound for pound that some BMs, but not all. No way would I have any Focus over any 3 Series, nor would I have any Fiesta over any 1 Series. Better value? Maybe if you’re only considering initial outlay but I’m not convinced that’s correct if you look at cost to own over three years. You might pay more for the BMs but you’d get much more of your outlay back at the end of three years of ownership.

The A Class is shite. A chap I know at the gym, his wife has one. He has a go-to mechanic that helps him with his weekend car, an old Alfa 3 litre V6. Anyhoo, his wife’s Merc developed a fault and he asked his mechanic, who subsequently refused to work on it on the basis that he probably wouldn’t be able to fix it as they’re so unreliable.

Back to the 1 and 2 Series. Same as any car, depends what you want it for. If you wanted a small hatchback, are you seriously suggesting you’d pick a Fiesta over a 1 Series? If I was looking for a car that small, I’d more than likely pick a Golf but that’s Focus category. I’m not sure Ford build a comparison to the 2 Series but comparing it to a Mondeo is sheeps and goats. What you say about the Mondeo is fair but you overlook one point, which would be significant for some; the one complaint my mate at work has is that it’s too wide and he struggles on some roads with those bullshit traffic calming narrow points. It’s also a nightmare on narrow country lanes. I have to confess though, I wouldn’t have known about that had he not said. Now he has, I can see it’s enormously wide.

As I’ve said above, Fords are good cars for the money. The longest I’ve ever kept a car is nine years and that was my Sierra XR 4 x 4. Awesome car and I loved her. If I absolutely had to have a Ford today, I’d prolly pick a Kuga as it best suits what I need a car for. However, I’d pick a Hyundai Tucson before a Kuga.
One small point of order.....I never mentioned 'Fiesta' at any point!!

FFS, do you actually read posts and take a minute or so to consider them or do you always shoot from the hip on the basis of what you think someone has written? I, me, yes me, mentioned the Fiesta on the basis that it was a more reasonable comparison against the 1 Series, whereas you were making irrelevant comparisons.

I like the 1 Series but not sure I could own one for the reasons you state. They do appear to be exclusively driven by idiots, which is a shame. It’s a great little car that’s quick, economical and has rear wheel drive. Well, the latest version won’t (or doesn’t, if it’s already been released).

As for the Kuga, it would be he one I would choose if I was forced to buy a Ford but that’s about it. For a small SUV, I’d go with the Tucson as Hyundai seem pretty much bullet proof and offer decent specs for the money.

Anyhoo, I’m loving my car and plan on hanging onto her for the foreseeable as she does everything I want and need, with a large dollop of fun added to the mix when required. I’ll worry about what comes next when she’s legislated off the road by the liberal, snowflake, man-hating, lesbian vegans.

They have poor residuals and second hand prices reflect this. Not much to wonder about. If you’re buying one second hand, you’ll get an awful lot of car for your money.

I owned a BMW once. it was a 1987 320i. I had upgraded from a Nissan Stanza.

I was so happy the day they delivered my company car (a brand new 2000 Vauxhall Astra 1.8l SRI ) & I could get rid of it. Someone actually offered to give me £1000 for it. I think they were intellectually sub-normal.

We've got a 3 year old new shape Suzuki Vitara. Bought with sod all miles as it was ex demo. Functional, reliable, cheap to run and quite fun to drive in comparison to the various other SUV's that I test drove. I delberately went for the 1.6 petrol as I don't reckon these turbo'd small block petrol engines have got any longevity or are fun to drive, especially if you do big miles when on holiday like we do.

Our RX8 stays as it's great for baiting the liberal, snowflake, man-hating, lesbian vegans you mentioned. :D

And you say I am cantankerous.....

:jaja-no:

The reason I didn't mention Fiesta is because it isn't, IN MY VIEW, a fair comparison to any BMW - on a cost basis the Focus and Mondeo are a fairer comparison to the 1 and 2 Series.

Let's face it, if I said 'black' you would say 'white'.

You are cantankerous. You could start a fight in an empty phone box. If you’d have read my post properly in the first place, it would have been pretty clear why I raised the Fiesta.

I have a watch that costs the same as a decent 1 Series. Is that a fair comparison?

Good shout!!(y)

And they managed to make a really good car ugly as sin!!

That is a matter of opinion.

I had a current shape Mondeo (brand new) and it was the biggest heap of shit it has ever been my misfortune to drive. Fortunately it was a company car.

It was badly built and the first car that I have ever driven where I had to stop every hour just to give my back a rest.

But a year later, I purchased the Mondeo chassis derived Jag (X-Type) brand new.

The last run of the X-Type had over 500 changes to the previous model including the current grill, and not only was it £5K cheaper than the Mondeo, it has more toys, is far superior for comfort (500+ mile trips in one hit easy), is good looking (in my opinion) and has not dated as the Mondeo has, and build quality has been top notch.

10 years later (in fact 10 years this month) I am still running the same car and still enjoy it. So it all comes down tomatters of opinion.

What has surprised me from day one is when you go somewhere and someone says "What car have you got?" Answer "Jag" and you get a "Oh nice" response.

If you say Ford, you get "What model?"

But on the subject of BMW's, I have had a couple of 5 series over the years, and apart from the fact that they are now mainly driven by Chavs, they are no longer special cars like they were back in the 70's when they were still a desirable brand.

Apart from which, mine became bloody expensive to own and a certain breed of driver now seems to be the main drivers of Beemers. I think "Tosser" is the name. ;)
