Probably trying to get round paying fees if it's a large value item. If it's only a couple of quid though, it sounds a little dodgy.

I bought a bike via eBay last year. Guy didn't want a deposit but I arranged a 320 mile round trip to pick it up. Due to pick up on a Sunday & the sale was cancelled Saturday night. Phoned the guy up as I was approx 4 miles away in a hotel & he explained that by cancelling the sale, he wouldn't have to pay any fees. Sounded reasonable & I picked up the bike no problems the following day.

I think eBay have changed their terms recently and reserve the right to charge a fee/commission on a cancelled sale if there has been interest in the item, calling it an “introduction fee”. It won’t affect you as a buyer but be wary when selling.

£350 , assume I am covered by paypal if item is not kosher? Will I still be OK if he refunds and I pay cash?

Personally I would play it with a straight bat.

PayPal aren't stupid, they know this stuff goes on . Who knows, one day they might come to you for the fee they didn't get? Heaven only knows what is in their small print....but I bet it isn't pretty!

Paypal will require proof of delivery to ensure the buyer is protected, the seller cannot prove it if you collect. Therefore he will want payment in cash. To me, that is fine to be asked for payment if you are collecting. eBay will send a warning to the seller if they simply cancel the sale and refund, them unless being if he then shows it as sold and payment received. It isn’t to avoid fees or suchlike, it is to prevent you from saying you never received it if you insisted on paying by PayPal.

Just emailed him and told him I prefer to stick with the original agreement with paypal, if he wanted cash he should have stated that on his auction, he has several running and none say cash only. In fact there was an option to pay monthly.

If you pay cash then you'll lose out on the PayPal buyer protection. Assuming that it's none of these then I'd stick with PayPal payment....

These are the purchases PayPal Buyer Protection doesn't cover.
  • Real estate.
  • Motorised vehicles (of any kind).
  • Custom-made items.
  • Industrial machinery (for manufacturing).
  • Prepaid cards.
  • Items that violate our policies.
  • Anything you buy in person.
  • Money transfers to friends or family.

I have done it my self in the past... Saves the 4% though I have always done the refund with the buyer there, and asked him to check he has got it ok..

I seem to recall a problem with PayPal where people have been stitched up with payments being reversed by buyers (including someone on here). That was some time ago, no idea if it is still possible.

That is wrong.. WAY wrong
the fee for £350 should be a maximum of £14.50 ( could be as low as £4.20 if you are a big user )

Are you sure it is paypal, and not eBayfinal valuation fee plus PayPal fee ?

He showed me his bill which was £12.10 from PayPal and said ebay will take 10% of the £350 so £35 total £47.10? Either way I'm happy I got a bargain.

I’ve just sold a rear Busa panel on eBay. I’ve just sent it by myhermes to the address on the PayPal payment notification. Then on the eBay screen it has a different delivery address. As that one isn’t verified and therefore I’m not safeguarded it is going to his home address. I’ve advised the buyer and waiting for his response. His fault not mine.

Ah.. thats more like it... So it was not PayPal but eBay that took the big hit''
Actually 10% is not too bad compared to an auction house. Many take 15% plus VAT AND charge the buyer a fee too
