My rates have just been hiked up & the reason given is extra cost of the Police & fire service, “what extra cost”? I thought, as they have cut their numbers, however I have noticed an increase in the number of Police camera vans at the side of the roads.

They have very little to do with ‘Police’. The NHS have more of a say in those vans and their allocated locations than the Police do. Last document I saw was the NHS have something like a 27% say in the location and the Police a 2% say, the rest is divided up between all the other multi agencies with a finger or three in the pie. Your increase is probably to buy a PCC a new chair or similar.

I find it strange that the amount the council can raise is limited by the government but the police precept can go up by as much as they want. My police precept has risen by nearly 15% and, even worse the parish council have put up their take by 24%. I assume it's so they can have chocolate digestives with their coffee instead of Nice or Rich Tea. I haven't had a reply to the email I sent them asking why they put it up by nearly a quarter.

"The Act places a duty on public authorities to adopt and maintain publication schemes.
Such schemes must set out the types of information the authority publishes, the form in which the information is published and details of any charges.
Schemes must be approved by the Information Commissioner who is responsible for enforcing the Act."

As a point of interest only, the FOI scheme is currently under review and I understand the recommendation is that all requests go through a vetting system to weed out the high proportion of silly questions that are being asked....sounds a bit counter-intuitive, but at the end of the day it costs the taxpayer money to answer every question.

Corrected for you.
