Went to Birmingham today, when we got back to Moore Street station, there was 2 armed officers several other police people and a portable screening device. Ok I am in favour of the police trying to reduce knife crime by screening people in public places (and they do a difficult job well) but did they need two armed officers who had what looked like machine guns ???:machinegun:

Maybe not overkill, if they find somebody who is armed they may be reluctant to give up their weapons, those gpmg’s may be the difference between life & death.

Always easy to criticise plod when there isn't a full picture of why they are doing what they are doing.

I believe the current level of threat from terrorist attacks is 'severe' (one below the highest state on the five point scale).

I recall the first time I saw armed officers in The City of London in the 1980s - it made me do a double take but once I took it in I found it reassuring.

I think a gimpy might just be a wee bit over the top for urban policing. :D

I am not critisising the police and understand the unarmed police need some back up, but would they really have shot anyone who didn't want to hand over their knife???

Maybe it is just me I am not used to seeing armed police around and feel uncomfortable with it.

Personally I would like to see the law changed that anyone carrying a knife or a gun is convicted on the basis that they were going to use it rather than just carry it.

If someone pulls a knife on plod than I would prefer that they were shot than plod endangered.

It's all going to change when I come to power.

If someone refuses to hand over a weapon then it can be safely assumed that they want to use that weapon, bullet to the head will prevent that.

They've had them armed always from day 1 in N.I. as far as I recall.
Then they had the army.

Apparently, according to the news, armed gardai units are already rostered for border counties.

And in the Free State, Alec. My father carried a gun in Donegal when he was 18 in the RIC!

Was that not before the "free state"
My father joined in 1923 I think but was never armed.
I think he was in the IRB/IRA but stood down though his brother didn't.
Don't know how that was reconciled.

Same should apply to anyone who gets into a car drunk or drugged up. It's a deliberate intent to endanger the lives of others.
No different to someone standing in the street firing off a pistol randomly in all directions..."Oh I didn't mean to hurt anyone".
