Engine management light

Is the engine management light on, a fail for the MOT, as in a car, just want to know if I should bother sorting it before the big day??

No idea Ian - an abs light is a fail.

if you haven’t got one a code reader is a great investment. Lambda sensors are a very common cause fot management light and dead easy to replace.

Another common reason is dirty throttle body assuming FI - disconnect the plastic air intake, if there is any oily muck in the throttle body wipe it out as best as you can.

Sorry if ‘sucking eggs’...

Spend a tenner on a OBD box. This the one i use
Reset it, chances are it will be ok

+1 on that. I do this with my RX8 pre-MOT, as the various mod's set the EML off permanently.

Make sure you do the reset just before you drive the car over for the MOT. Most EML's are triggered after the problem has repeated a few times (unless it's something severe). If you reset it and then drive it for a day or two then it might return.
If you reset it on the day then the chances are that a single outing straight to the MOT place won't be enough to set it off (again, unless it's a serious problem, like a failing sensor or cat).

I’ve asked the MOT tester where I work and it’s DEFINITELY a fail.

Well my eldest has had the egr valve off today and given it a good clean out, lights still on and he thinks the front shocks are on their way as well, if it doesn't rain it pours, thanks for the helpfully posts.(y)
BTW apparently the ODB reader is not able to read this particular car and it needs a different one to what most people have, IE not the cheap ebay ones!!

A garage shouldn't charge much for plugging it into a diagnostic thingy.

Won't sort out the front shocks though:(

What car is it then ? It must have been built outside Europe or be over19 years old...
To get an EU conformancy certificate the odb has to meet certain requirements

It might be the original ODB, rather than the current ODB2. As JAWS said, down to the age of the car.

It's a 2002 astra 2.2 coupe, it needed a good blast and the engine management light has finally gone out, it should have been fine for the MOT tomorrow, but for the towbar electrics need wiring in properly, apparently it's now part of the new MOT test, I checked on the dvla site, :( so I've canceled the MOT anyway as Al recones that the front shockers are a bit soft, so I'm putting new shocks on before taking it.IMG_20180929_172137.jpg

2002, it should be fitted with an ODB2 port. Port is found under a plastic cover between the handbrake and the gear lever.
A lot of older cars seem to be a bit selective as to which ODB readers they will play with.

If that's the case then avoid the bluetooth ones that you link to your phone. The ELM327 based models can be a problem with older cars and there are a lot of cheap clones for sale on Fleabay.
An all in one reader is a safer bet, or see how much your friendly neighbourhood Vauxhall stealer will charge to plug in their diagnostic kit (probably Tech 2). You can then check any error codes that they find to see what might be playing up.
