Decided to do an oil and filter change today...Spur of the moment thing.I had an oil filter ready on the shelf,so popped down to Halfords and bought some of their own brand 10/40 Semi synth Motorcycle oil....Never used this stuff before always seemed to use either Motul or Castrol Power One ...It Seems o/k.
Anyone else used this stuff???Any problems? Does anyone rate it??

As long as it's 10/40 semi and from a decent supplier, Then I'll use pretty much any make.

Been using it since I got back into biking 11 years ago, every other year unless I have a high mileage year.

I have used it in a few bikes without problems, having said that I change the oil regularly anyway so any reasonable brand would probably be ok

I must have done 20 or so oil changes on my two Birds over the years using Halfords semi synthetic with no issues.

Worth bearing in mind that halfords regularly discount oil to ?10 for five litres although the motorbike stuff isn't usually included. however, it has been included a couple of times so worth looking out for.

Castro Racing 1

Hi, New here. I use Halfords, but buy Castrol Racing 1 fully synthetic from them instead. Recently I got several 4litre cans for £25.90 each. They usually cost £40. I wouldn't touch their own oil unless I had a real banger I didn't care about. HTH.

If you are putting fully synth into your Bbird then you are looking for trouble, Scarlet. The engine was specifically designed for semi-synth and clutch problems usually occur with fully synth. Occasionally we have had a few peeps who insist that they have used fully synth for years with no problems but they are the exceptions. Un-necessary expense like peeps who insist on changing oil more often than Honda recommends. Like others I have used Halfords oil, on several bikes, for years without a problem. Gilding the lily when using higher spec oil. :-0)

You've got to remember that the technology behind the Bird is over 20 years old which could (and some do) fit into the bracket of 'real banger'. h1d1ng2

Given it is a simple old style muscle power unit and not tuned within an inch of it's life, I wouldn't have an issue of using standard dinosaur oil as long as it was 10/40.

Honda knows better than me so I follow their advice and use semi 10/40 but I would use any make depending on the price on the day of purchase.

Your bike your choice however.

When it comes to the bird, sometimes through boredom and the ability to tinker, we sometimes come over all Germanic and over complicate things

It works best with standard exhausts, standard air filter, and standard recommended oil. Anything other than that is personal choice for your own bike.

Sorry but I no longer do engine rebuilds Pimpy :-0) .. and you might need one if you stick that stuff in a Bird !!

Oh, and welcome to Bird !!

For the past 18 years I have used nothing but Vauxhall 10/40 semi synth in all my bikes..
And as folk know, I am not one to hang about and I seem to rack up HUGE mileages..

Thanks for your reply. I use Motorcycle Castrol Racing 10/40 fully synthetic. It is my impression that whatever oil is used oil should not make contact with the clutch otherwise it slips and burns, but I might be wrong. Maybe you mean the gearbox? The oil ratings from when Honda produced the Blackbird have improved somewhat. Mine seems to be going fine. Thanks again.

The Blackbird - like many other bikes out there uses a WET clutch.
It is designed to run in oil and actually works worse without oil soaked plates.

Many oils are designed to work with the WET clutch - they generally have the JASO MA or MA2 rating on the side to indicate they don't contain friction modifiers that kill the wet clutch.

I suggest you find out the difference between a wet clutch and a dry clutch. Then find out which one the 'Bird uses.

The oil ratings may have improved since the 'Bird was produced, but I don't think the tolerances and specification of your 'Bird have magically improved since the day it was built.

Seems to be a KAKFA.

I did try instead of oil, using custard. However after about 5 miles there were half a dozen bikers following me all mumbling, crumble crumble CRUMBLE. Rhubarb is my favourite
