Hey guys nice to see some of you are still on here, finally got back on a BIRD after a few years.

I've just brought a W REG black blackbird and I am wanting to paint it matte black but everywhere i read I see mixed thoughts about this subject, so I thought why not asked you lot after all, your all owners of these beauty's or at least was in the past.

I would like to know how much I'm going to be stripped down cash wise for starters?

Can it be protected by a lacker, or is this what's causes the shine?

Has anybody got a matte black BIRD and can I see some pics?

And How hard is it to clean?

I have the 2 side fairings and the nose cone that will need to be primer-ed and painted so I can keep the original panels on the bike, but I am looking for the rear fairing if anybody has one :)

Also on the back end of that does anybody know any good powder coaters as I'm looking to paint the wheels a dark red.

I live in the Birmingham area but I am willing to travel a little if the price is right.

Thanks in advance

Hiya mate,
matt black def has issues..
Anywhere that gets rubbed will get shinier than other places.

put a lacquer on it and it will go shiny !

Expect about ?5-600 for a complete job

My bird was matt black or to give it it's correct term "stealth black" & much as I loved it & the colour it did shine where my knees rubbed the tank, this spoilt the effect as it meant the bike lost it's stealthiness, it was still faster than any other colour.

good looking AND modest
Take my word for it, Matt is NOT the way to go, however for probably a lot cheaper you could get it wrapped!! any colour you want, that way as soon as you realise that matt really is shit, you can just peel it off!! :dunno:

Failing that, Taffy has some great paint ideas!! and is worth an ask!! @tu*

Matt black always looks like some scrote has stolen it then tried to disguise it with a halfords rattle can.

Because it has a tendency to go shiny in patches of regular contact it makes them look like they have Matt black acne.

Step away from the chav paint chart. Next you'll be wanting white with gold pinstriping.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

A set of stomp grips and a decent tank protector takes care of the front (literally).

If you carry a regular pillion you can buy transparent, adhesive protection film and apply appropriately to the seat cowl.

Life?s not about garnering the approval of others, it?s about getting the things that you want - and enjoying them.

Nice pic, looks very similar to my bike, just maybe a bit cleaner!

I like the matt finish, others (obviously) don't. It makes my bike different from the masses.

Shinyness is a problem. I got a small scratch on the tank, and can't buff it out, or polish it. So I bought a baglux tank cover. They are pretty matt in appearance, and it fits in quite well.
Washing is also a bit interesting; lots of the products out there are designed to add extra shine to shiny things, which is exactly what you don't want.

And the gold wheels collect and show up the road crap at an incredible rate.

ACF50 on the wheels after washing will make them much easier to clean next time ? don?t get it on the discs unless you?re looking for a bit of excitement. :p

The rest is up to you ? I can?t recall what I used to clean my old bike, but it did over 70K miles ? a lot of that 2-up around Europe - and the only paint issues were in the areas I mentioned earlier in this thread.

It might be worth asking around about the scratch in your tank ? but if you?ve got a tank bag on, why worry? ;-0))

A thought, a lot of people use helicopter tape to prevent damage particulary on vunerable areas. Do they make it in a matt?

On gloss bikes, rub marks can be protected with fablon. Matt you could try the matt covering they use on book covers, that'll stop rub marks.
Jaws favourite WD40 will leave a matt finish.

I rather like the Matt finish.

What about satin laquer?
