Thinking of replacing my 4 year old Lumix FZ150 bridge camera for a dslr ..

Some back ground

I am fairly experienced photographer
First half decent camera was probably a 35mm Helena ( proper budget !) and moving on through various 2 1/4 square format cameras ( Rolleiflex etc ) along with a myriad of 35mm ones, including early Asahi Pentax and the like.
I finally sold off my entire darkroom only 4 or 5 years ago

Interests include macro photography, candid portraits, occasional scenery and general 'people pictures'

What does the panel think and recommend ?

I have a canon 700d which is very good and as it is a few years old now there is probably an even better one out now

The panel says....what's yer budget..?

What about a Fujifilm XT-10....or, if you can find one...a secondhand XT-1 body..?

I only have negative views on this.

Everyone thinks it is black and white.

Does all depend on your budget, as said above, I've been using Canon and my present one is a trusty 60D which does a lot more than my ageing mind can remember the day after learning what it did!

High end, full frame, I believe the 5D gets good reviews.

But whatever you get, follow that up with Lightroom and for more in depth work Photoshop, shoot in RAW and you've got your digital darkroom.

Come on you Hatters
We seem to have an ever growing collection of Canons. 20D, 60D and 450D bodies and various lenses including 75-200 and 200-400 USM models. I doubt either of us has learnt 5% of they’re capability’s.

This MAY be on hold..The thumb has been raised over my head.. Sell one of your metal detectors and that will fund a camera..

Tis true and to be honest I find getting up and down off the ground difficult nowadays.... But I am still reluctant to let my Safari go, and that is the that would raise the sort of moolah needed

Hmmmm, I would view your metal detectors as like having a dog. You have to walk a dog so you're exercising whether you like it or not. Ok to sell one if you have an equally good one as back-up, otherwise no way. Unless you prefer taking pics to metal detecting.

Purely for macro purposes alone, when on survey I carry the Olympus Tough TG-4. It's actually called 'microscope' mode and it's bloody fantastic. It's waterproof to 15 metres and shockproof to take a drop of 2.1 metres. I almost always carry two cameras on survey in case one shits itself because of the environments I work in but the TG-4 is an excellent back-up if it's pissing down or very dusty. Prolly no good as your one and only though.

As a primary, I use either my Sony HX-300 bridge; Panasonic TZ-70 bridge; or, Sony WX 350 compact.

Hmmmm Afraid the Olympus tough range is out of it.. Top unit for your job but with only 12,1 mp and a 4x zoom its just not spec'ed towards my sort of use

i use a 50 D ,no video but thats no issue for me, 50-500 sigma for any sport and 28-70 for everything else n
Wow !
The spec on that is excellent for a low end camera.. And Canon lenses are well priced too
I think you may well have put me on the path to what I am looking for Nige :)

Better frame yourself & focus on the subject, John has shown clear proof of his intent to buy a camera & I think he needs to filter the answers as it will give him a wider angle to work at.
