I thought freedom of speech only applied if you agree with whoever shouts the loudest?

If there is a threat to public safety then free speech comes a distant second.

If the National Front ‘meeting’ in Southall Town Hall in the 80s had been stopped in a similar way it is very possible that the numerous riots in London and elsewhere would not have happened.

Southall is about twenty miles from Brixton so doubt it would have any bearing, the riots happened because of the Police stop & search policy, black people thought they were being unfairly targeted, or that is the excuse, the fact that there were many white people involved including Jimmy White tells me it was just an excuse to cause damage & steal from shops.

It was the spark that started the fires, albeit they were well stoked and ready to go. Either way if the NF meeting AKA blatant provocation hadn’t been allowed the outcome in Southall might have been very different. The police attitude at the time was to protect the right of free speech…..that must have been so uncomfortable for the poor sods who had to stand in front of the NF basically protecting them from the people they deliberately antagonised.

I do agree that there were many, many people who saw the aftermath as an excuse to loot, rape and murder.

There is an excellent three parter on Channel 4 catch up about the Southall riots - Defiance: Fighting the Far Right.

Why is it that the phrase "right wing" automatically gets bundled in with the NF and their ilk...? You can't be politically biased towards the right without being branded a racist or a violent extremist or considered to be a threat to public safety.... It gets on my wick.
My political views are definitely right of centre, yet the NF et al are about as far from what I believe in as the likes of Chairman Corbyn's marxist ideologies are at the other end of the political spectrum.
It puts me in mind of what happens when anyone English displays the flag of St George. The extreme left will be triggered immediately and label anyone who does so as being a member of the likes of the NF, etc. or at the very least, a chavvy football hooligan.

People with opposing opinions are labelled, homophobic, racist, hate criminals etc, I have been kicked off a few sites, one for saying that same sex partners should not be allowed kids, another one because I told the truth about Leeds United’s Jewish owners refusing to sell the club to the Arabs, another one because I stated that homosexuality is unnatural, at no time had I said that I hated anybody or wished them harm, I was threatened on one site despite choosing my words carefully, a Muslim was spouting about Westerners being corrupt, someone mentioned the grooming gangs, I asked him his opinions on Paedophiles & he said that as a Father they turned his stomach, I then asked him what he thought the age of consent should be & he said 16, I then asked him how old Profit Mohammed’s wives were, he went into a rant saying I’d insulted Mohammed, I then pointed out that I had only asked a question, he responded by saying if I’d said that in his community I would be beheaded.

Good. Much as I think Farage is just a Trump in waiting, he's got as much right to speak his bullshit as anyone else.
Well based on the reaction/result of Trumps inspirational speeches, I'm not so sure.
Remember the increase in Chinese assaults after Trump's comments.

The Orange One is a prime example of populist rabble rousing and Farage seeks to emulate him.
Pander to a certain segment of society by portraying them as victims, give them a "target" which is responsible for their supposed victimisation. Having lit the blue touch paper, they then sit back and stoke the mayhem.

It occurs within the full range of politics because both ends of the political spectrum attract the lowest common denominator.
