On Saturday, I was invited to attend an advanced drivers conference in Newbury.

Anyway, I had just arrived when someone tapped me on the shoulder and said "I just wanted to say thank you" Stunned, I asked "What for?" so he told me that I was his examiner when he took his first advanced driving test which is what got him into advanced driving and riding in the first place.

So I said the customary "You are welcome" response and then said "I am sorry I don't recognise you, when did I examine you?" "1985" he replied

No wonder I didn't remember him, I have carried out in excess of probably 2,000 tests over the past 32 years, and I can't remember who I met last week let alone who I met in 1985

Anyway, no damage done, he is chairman of a group in South Wales and wants me to go and give a talk to his group. Happy to do so :thumb: But what a shock to have someone remember me after all these years after a one off meeting.

I've been a skills trainer for the best part of 20 years & it's quite a regular feature having a 'stranger' come up to me to say how much they enjoyed my session when I haven't a clue what, when, where or who. I never got used to that.

We have offices all over the UK & until recently, I got to visit most of them so I have an idea where you're coming from.

Take it as a compliment that you haven't changed over all the years

Conversely, I bumped into someone at a social event last Friday who was my boss (significantly more senior than me at the time)in the early eighties. For some reason or other he decided to tell me that I was 'forced' into his area (I was promoted 'outside the system' for doing a good job during a period of crisis), he didn't want me there and was glad when I left after two years.

It was a bit of the beer talking, but I really couldn't understand why he felt it necessary to raise the subject after thirty odd years. However, it did explain some stuff that happened around that time. I got a bit bored with him after a while of listening/biting my tongue, so thought I would let him now how quickly I overtook him, how much further I got than him and that I was now happilly retired while he was still leaving home at six am and getting in at 8pm despite him being six years older than me.

A real contrast to meeting up with a load of people that I hadn't seen for a year - just picked up where we left off.
