SW Motech Alurack Adapter Plate Safety Issue

I am in Australia. I bought the SW Motech Quick Lock Adapter Plate & Alurack to carry either a Givi E36 Sidecase/Topbox or E 52 Maxia Topbox. Today I had the E36 on the bike. At one of our stops I noticed that the box was loose. Close examination showed that the disc springs used to tension the cam lock had failed. The remaining disc springs were cracked showing the telltale signs of metal fatigue. Obviously if they had all failed anyone following me was in deep shit. I am really concerned about this & have sent an email to Twisted Throttle (US company where I purchased the system). Please be warned about this very real safety issue. I have photograph but I don't know how to attach it.

Must admit to not liking the TopBox being on a kwik-lock fastener, so I bolted my adaptor plate to the mounting plate with nyloc nuts to stop it moving slightly...

Works a treat now...No problems

BTW... We have done some 10000miles touring with this system, and no problems at all with any of the other componenets.

Best wishes, and thanks for the info rowbike.

Cheers,

Rolfy

ps... How do you row a bike ?????:dunno:

Thanks for that. I was thinking of throwing it away. The nyloc system seems to be a very logical solution.

I'm not posh!

I used galvanised roofing bolts to fasten mine on! Like Rolfy Dave I was not happy with the movement on the Dzus type fasteners. with the new bolts on I regularly had my 52 litre Givi so full of paper I could not carry it with one hand!

havent fitted mine yet but this issue does seem to be limited to a few cases..so it seems?
found a fastner company that does the same fittings so a few hours on the phone later i have ordered new 1/4 turn pins and the bolt on recepticales to convert them to 9.5mm ones
there is no way these ones will fail as the motech ones are only 5m od rated at approx 900nm
im hoping with the verniers and long chats with there tech support i have ordered the correct parts as the bolts come in different lenths to suit with only .75mm difference:eek: ... .75 under and you wont be able to lock it.. ..75 over and hello loose lugage and possible removal from the bike at high speed unplanned%$fan
the bolts are ?7.80 each:mad: ..however the holding washers and recepitals are only about 50p each and as they have a lot of stock that seem to be the correct size for the motech you can get them for ?5 quid:bow:
it will involve drilling out the top plate holes to 9.6mm and filing a little slot to take the cross pin as per the holes now, then simply bolting the recepital to the ali rack on the bike..the holes in this are big enough without modification
the pull strength on each ONE of these new bolts is 3700nm..compaired to 900 for the standard thats a lot of undiesg0551p
should have the bits here in a few days and ill do the mod..once im happy its all ok ill post back the part numbers and details of where to get them..and the guys name who is now pretty clued up on sw-motech racks:p
might even post a piccie or 2 to show the modp0pc0rn41

The bolts & pins did not fail, although they do seem very light. It was the disc spring washers which split & disintegrated. Without the washers there is no tension & the cam lock system fails.

First thing I bought for my new to me Bird was the rack, must say that the universal plate for the top box's had to much play in them, wobbled and vibrated to much with the box on. so I made an adapter plate from alloy, simple job, and picked the three holes up and permanently bolted the original base off my kappa rack to the new motec rack, which btw I think is a cracking piece of kit .. bolted it down with 3 stainless studs and its now solid as a rock ..

Plan on leaving it on so the quick release is not a prob, but its only a five minute job to remove it anyway ..

like everyone else just waiting for the weather to improve a degree or two so I can go try things out properly :xm

If by the pull strength you mean tensile, then 3,700N is not a lot. This can be achieved by a grade 4.8 M4 fastener.
By using a grade 12.9 material, the same size fastener would achieve 10.700N

I recently fitted the alurack with the side holders to my 2005 BB and went to the skeggy bash with a givi E 52 Maxia and noticed when I got back after about 600 miles it had cracked my rear seat cowl where the mounting bolts went in. has any one else heard of this or maybe I should learn German for the fitting instructions. Any help would appreciated I?ve purchased a new seat cowl ?350 and am apprehensive to re fit the rack.

Thanks w;;v

hate to say it but the reason your seat cowl cracked is cos the bolts were over tightened Zoltan..
I have seen this a few time ( with just about every type of rack and bolt on gizmo out there..
I would suggest you take whoever fitted it to task as they were def a bit on the ham fisted side...
Overtightening of rear cowl bolts must account for about 1/2 of all the new cowls I have supplied over the years !
