staying awake

how do the long distance boys stay awake whilst riding???

got half an idea for a little run but it involves around 1000 miles in 24 hrs couple of time critical points as well, worried about falling asleep.

so anybody know how they do it???

Don't think there's a magic formula Andy, but some common sense tells you to make sure you've had plenty of sleep and rest before setting off, stay well hydrated, wear decent ear plugs to reduce tiredness caused by noise, stretch on the bike regulalry and when you eat just eat light meals. Multivitamins?

Being in a happy state of mind helps combat fatigue, sing songs - talk to yourself, and if you exercise your brain whilst riding (like calculating your fuel consumption) this will keep you awake.

Failing that there's Class A's?

I don`t want to sound like a killjoy ,but, can you not make a little more time for the journey instead of risking life and limb cramming in the miles?

I have done this ( twice now )

The first one was years ago when I rode to Aberdeen and back.. Left at 9 am and got back home about 4 am the next day.. Stopping for fuel was enough of a break to wake me up again.. but that was on a CX500.

More recently I did the Italy to home thing in one hit.

The only time I struggled was about 3 AM .. but it was bloody cold by that time and that fended off the sand man :p

Here is a thought Andy.. ( and it could be why I succeeded )
I had given up the fags a few weeks before.. I still had a certain amount of , not so much craving, but just wanting a smoke every now and then..

It might just sharpen you up a bit ( read keep you edgy ) if you do not have a fag for the entire run.. Just a thought ( and proly a daft one ! )

I have done the National Rally, 600 miles in 24 hrs. I have also done a couple of 10hr, 500 mile rides. Stopping for fuel, a snickers and a drink (water) with a leg stretch and wee were enough for me.

Jaws is right about struggling in the depths of the night. Even though I have worked shifts (nights at least twice a week) for 27 years, between 2am and 4 am I still get the urge to fall asleep. It's nature. That's what we animals do.
On the bike it's worse because your vision is restricted and the lower temperatures make you want to shut down and just get cosy.

Regular breaks are the thing and if you feel like having forty winks. Stop and have forty winks.
Nick Sanders could sleep on a washing line. 10 minutes and you feel refreshed and away you go again.

You get a great sense of achievement after a long run or one throughout the night. I like reading about the Iron Butt Rally in the states.

Just be sensible.
Go for it.

Done a few long distance trips on the bike of 725 miles over 10 hrs.
Very regular 500 mile Manchester - Dorset - Manchester runs
And a few similar in the car.

I find driving in the summer, early morning through to dusk is superb.
Night drives make me nod no matter how much kip i've had previously.

Chocky bars and REDBULL are my fave roadtrip munch.

Open your visor a t tiny bit if you feel your mind wandering, the cool air refreshes you temporarily, however, sleep is the only long term fix.

Are you planning a trip 'FOXY'?? Don't leave 'Splitty' out.

if i can get the time of work, i am hoping to do home to lowestoft to lands end to home again in 24hrs.

but sunrises at around 04.45 and sets about 22.00 so got 17hrs to get from lowestoft to lands end give or take a few hrs to view it park up etc, should not be a problem but then will have around 3-4 hrs to get home in time, for the 24hrs and for me to get some kip if work only let me have the 1 day off.

might just have to shelf it and wait for it to fall on a weekend.

hhhmmmmm

its a great idea, but having nearly fallen asleep on the motorway too often trying to keep to time restrictions, I'd not recommend risking it. Maybe I'm a wuss, but its just not a nice feeling, and while 10mins kip does solve it, by the time you've stopped and sorted out where you're going to kip, it'll take lots longer than 10 min to get snoozing!!h1d1ng2

However - if determined, I was recommended to do star jumps on break stops to get oxygen in bloodstream and blood moving quicker!! c7u8 (My sister's theory is that we get tired driving cos we're cramped up and so not using lungs to full capacity!)!!!!

Anyway - star jumps do work to a degree, but you sure feel like a fool pulled off the motorway doing star jumps in full leathers and helmet on the verge! (verge of being arrested probably!! or taken away by men in white coats!!!!) :neenaw: :neenaw:

I've done quite a few long haul rides like this. Used to eat any old rubbish and sports drinks and caffeine drinks like Red Bull and V - felt like crap every time. The last two rides like this were done drinking plain water (slug it down every gas stop) and a scroggin mix of nuts, raisins and dried banana rings. Protein and natural sugars don't give you stomach problems, especially getting caught short at the least convenient time!

I carried a caffeine drink for slugging down at the last checkpoint but didn't need it. Avoid chocolate bars and the like. You get a short energy high then go downhill fast.
