Yesterday whilst on my motorbike ... had an arse in a car who tried cutting me up.
I accelerated to go past him and he accelerated to get past me and he kept going faster ... I slowed down when I reached about 40-44 in a 40 zone and he pulled away...
Only then ... I noticed what was facing us ahead ....He didn’t spot it ! he flew past the speed camera van going 50+ (Think he was looking at me in his rear view mirror
Not sure if I got zapped yet ... but the car was a dead cert !!!
The cars behind me started to overtake and their anchors came on rapidly when they saw what I had already spotted

Let’s see if the postie delivers something in the post ???
Be gutted if I get a ticket after all these years !!!

Stand a good chance of getting away with it I reckon.
If you do get a nip go not guilty as you were not speeding and they got a false reading from the car that shot past you very close

Had a similar in a car recently passing a slower moving truck and just alongside/slightly in front when I noticed a dark blue camera van on the left verge about 100m in front - was doing 50-55 in a 50 limited section of the A1. Fortunately nothing has arrived (now over 20 days ago) so wondering if it was a speed camera van or an anpr van.
As Jaws says you could be fortunate/lucky.

Respect the speed limit and there is no need for luck.

Beats me why they never put happy snappy vans on housing estates. If they put one on our road they'd clock quite a few doing 50+ in a 30.

I did a little experiment and rode at 30 and 40 mph respectively (using my phone’s gps speedo app ...available from The App Store) and my bike speedo seems to be reading slightly high
So ...... IF the phone app is correct ???? At an indicated 44ish mph I MAY have been slightly below the speed I thought I was and which case ..... I MAY be less than the camera upper limit??

However which is correct ? Can I trust the app?

Only time will tell I guess ???

If the road was straight, flat and level with no bends and your speed was constant, then I would say the app...………. maybe !!

If it were a Satnav then I would put more stake in the accuracy of its GPS receiver to show your speed, than the speedo (I always go by Satnav in an average speed camera area). Mobile phones don't tend to have great GPS receivers when it comes to static accuracy, but they should be sufficiently accurate to record speed over the ground better than the reading on your speedo.

There are a couple of caveats though....

1) How long was the app running while you tested it..? The longer they are receiving GPS input the more consistent - generally speaking - their level of accuracy (but see below).
2) What was the environment like where you tested...? GPS signals are very weak radio signals coming from satellites that are about 18 - 20,000km up. Almost anything can degrade their signals - the usual suspects are high buildings, dense tree canopy, low and heavy cloud/fog, being in a valley, the position of the phone (if you were carrying it then your body is potentially blocking half the sky.

What's the name of the app..?

GPS receivers in phones generally run at 1Hz. Once a second gives a lot of scope for error at motorbike speeds.

I used a 10Hz Bluetooth dongle paired to my phone when I do track days for accurate plots etc.

If you were on the bike then they would need to be able to see your rear facing plate. If the road was busy then I would be surprised if he got it.

I remember being on an unfamiliar bit of road, both myself and a the 1300 Pan in front of me let fly when the twisty we had been on, and stuck behind a car, opened up into a dual carriageway.
Didn't spot the van straight away, as they had positioned it so it was looking over a hedge.
But for the rest of my journey I couldn't stop laughing to myself after watching the operator trying to fight his way through the hedge to get our numbers.

Not much chance of that, the van was in a lay-by on the side of the road and I dawdled past it at less than 40mph after I slowed .... with cars chomping at the bit on the outer lane (they all seemed to brake too when they spotted it !)

At 30 - 40mph the error won't be much. At trackday speeds then, yes, it wouldn't be sufficiently accurate for accurate laptimes.
Are you using one of the Qstarz receivers..?
