... bars, clubs, cafes etc.

So, as from today, the Irish Government has banned smoking in all enclosed public places.

Should we do the same ??

No Way !!!!!!

I would stop using pubs, restaurants etc. if I couldn't have a smoke with me pint or after a meal.

By all means.....have a 'smoker's only' area and I can fully understand the feelings of those who don't smoke....but to ban smoking in all public places is complete overkill IMHO.

Yup too !!!

I say yes, but I am an "ex" smoker...and we are the worst on this subject...:}

To be honest... Most people who know me, know that I gave up smoking to buy the Blackbird.. I had a purpose for giving up, and the savings payed for it too...LOL

I dont like the smell of cigarettes, but that may be just the "temptation" thing. Jan & I had to sit in the smokers section of the local cafe on Saturday, and I felt as though I couldnt breath.

But I dont stop people from smoking (our son does, and the smell makes me :puke: , but its his life...) but I expect people to respect us as well.

Soapbox over... sorry, got carried away.

ps.. I still get the "urge" for a ciggy every now & again, but it does go away...

Oooh I'm on the fence on this one!

Beacuse at 9pm tonight I would have given up smoking for a week! I've been a HEAVY smoker of roll-ups since I was 13 years old.

I signed up with the non-smoking councelling scheme run by Superdrug (they give you a weeks worth of patches for the cost of a prescription, you go back each week for 6 weeks and they lower the dose plus give you support). At the start of the course they have to measure the amount of carbon monoxide in your body - It came out very low, they told me I had the levels they would expect to find in a very light smoker???? Weird. I can only put it down to roll-ups having far less crap and chemicals in them than tailor mades.

As for the new law in Dublin, well it will only drive it underground, businesses like greasy cafes will collapse in weeks. Literally.

Anyone on here use the London Underground regularly? Well I reckon that's a far worse health hazard due to the appaling air quality than sitting in a pub where people are smoking. A pub's not a pub without smoke, is it?

For me at the moment I can do without any temptation to start rolling them up again. Things are going well, those patches work, if you don't have Rizlas in the house or in the office or car it's impossible to smoke right!

Bloody insurance on the bike goes up though! (By 0.56%) It's proven that bikers who smoke have less accidents due to their need to stop regularly for nicotine. This refreshes their senses and keeps them alert apparantly.

Sam, absofuckinglutely spot on. And people who complain about passsive somking but live in big cities...:bandit:

I say, fuck that non-smoking shite in places where people come and enjoy themselves. For those of you who have been living/live in the USA (well the coasts states anyway) you know what I'm talking about... Health? associated with alcohol-serving places???????

Of course non-smokers should be respected, and that's why smoke extractors are manufactured. An efficient smoke extractor will make you no smell the smoke of somebody beside you - and with non-smoking sections separated from smoking sections, this is not an issue. Problem? The greed of people not fitting them.
Solution? Make it compulsory in any pub and restaurant, sorted, bob's your uncle, next... But hey, that's too easy isn't it>c7u8 man8um %$fan

My girlfriend visited smoking friends at the weekend, and returned with a sore throat, brown phlegm and foul-smelling clothes. Every visit to a pub means we return stinking of fags.

We're both non-smokers. She gave up when her dad died of lung cancer 5 years ago, and I've never been so weak as to need anything but coffee and booze. :f

The Paul Pry restaurant/pub is now non-smoking throughout here, and I'll be glad when other places go the same way. I'd rather they did it themselves though than through government legislation, because then they'll enforce it better and punters can vote with their feet.

I understand that barbeques give off much more carcinogens than you would be exposed to from passive smoking.
This law in Ireland is to ban smoking from the workplace, and thats why pubs etc are affected - cos someone works in them. It is not to protect other customers.
Will they ban pub/restaurant employees from operating BBQ's this summer?

IMO nobody should have to breathe in other people's smoke and I never object to people not letting me smoke in their house/cafe etc. My take on it is that it makes me smoke less so bring on the ban.

Governments always stop short of the ultimate sanction though - banning fags altogether. Why's that then?

Here is Florida they have already done this. It is based on the establishment's percentage of income as relates to food. I believe if 40% or greater of income is derived from food, then no smoking. The folks that want to smoke still can, they just have to go outside. There is nothing worse that coming home from a night out and reeking of cigarette smoke!!! Now I can smell the alcohol that I reek of. Much better!!! :yo:

I don't mean to be offensive but... don't you guys read the posts before replying? OK, gonna make it a bit bigger and maybe that's gonna sink in...SMOKE EXTRACTORS
You know, those fans that push air up in a conduit leading to outside instead of pushing air down on people.
Properly fitted, they sort the issue all together... so it's not smoking against non-smoking, it's restaurants owners/publicans getting their act together (or having a law enforcing that - after all, there are plenty of laws applying to those places re. safety, health and regulations, why not this one which would make a lot of sense??)... but of course, it's a bit easier to say, "oh me I don't smoke so I'm happy that everywhere becomes non-smoking"...
So, is there gonna be another post after this one still debating smoking or not in public places such as bars or pubs or restaurants? No doubt there will be :bang:

While we are at it!

think on this. every day of our lives we breath "fresh" air.......... full of crap from diesel and petrol fumes, that contains more filth then any pub has. No one moans about that, do they. I bet more people die from lung disease from breathing city air then they ever do from smoking.

I accept that everyone has right to their life and I mean everyone that includes smokers. As FrenchUK says fit extractor fans in the places make areas non smoking fer christs sake it aint rocket science :bang:

Hmmmm....smoke extractors.....interesting idea, but prolly cost prohibitive to the average business owner. This law does not cost the business owner anything by requiring the smoker to go outside. The smoker can still exercise his right to smoke and the non-smoker can exercise his right to not have to breathe it in a confined area.

Smoke Extractors??

Sounds good in theory (but not true of course). And when I was a smoker I would have gone along with that line of thinking. One thing I've learnt is a smoker is immune to the level and smell of ambient smoke and the smell on clothes, hair etc, - I know... I was once that person!

But as a non-smoker you do become much more aware of the other side of the coin as well. A side that's NOT considered when a smoker.

Extractors must help, but as for not being able to smell the smoke of the person next to you... that is definately NOT the the case, I can catagorically assure you of that!! And yes - clothes do smell strongly of smoke after being in a pub/club etc., EVEN if it has reasonably good ventilation.

And before anybody rears up about a reformed smoker being the worst... read again. These are just a few honest observations.

Wolfie

Is a lunp
so because i smoke, i should stand outside in the pissing rain, snow etc etc should I??????

Should i join the bikers/gays/blacks/arabs and anybody else that this so called society objects to????

should buy a gun and shoot anybody that doesn't agree with me or my way of life???

or should i just condem them????

"smokedriver kills 8"

whilst smoking at the wheel of his rude boy boom boom tin box local hero stev'gimpo' smith ploughed into a bus stop and kill 8 senoir citzins, who were on their way to the all night rave(grab a toyboy night)

every seen that in a paper??????

If a place is smokey and you do not like that then don't go in there.

Do you run into a burning room and then complain that you got burnt?????

Some places should be smoke free yes, but all of them no way.
